| PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION |
| The defining characteristic of a general doctoral degree in the field of education is that it requires the learner to demonstrate high-level research competence and to make a significant and original academic contribution at the frontiers of knowledge or in a sub-field of education. The research, which may be purely discipline-based, or multidisciplinary, or applied research, must be undertaken at the most advanced academic level, culminating in the production, defence and acceptance of a thesis. The learner should demonstrate research skills which should satisfy peer reviews and merit publication. The general doctoral qualification in the field of education should equip the learner with knowledge and skills to supervise the research of others in his/her area of specialisation.
Rationale: The qualification that is currently being offered in the Faculty of Education is the Doctor of Education: Mathematics, Science and Technology. The University is required to align this qualification with the Minimum Requirements for Teacher Education Qualifications (MRTEQ). The qualification includes the specialisations of Mathematics, Science and Technology. The D.Ed. will provide professional educators, leaders and academics with high-level research skills which will enable the learner to make a significant and original academic contribution at the frontiers of education or in a sub-field of education. The learner should be able to integrate theory and practice through the application of theoretical knowledge in highly complex problems in professional contexts. The qualification intends to accredit advanced and specialised academic, professional and occupational study of aspects of science education. It prioritises independent research and prepares learners for further post-doctoral studies. Given the different levels of preparation offered to educators, it could, therefore, serve as a critical bridge between pre-service professional education and advanced research activities. Consequently, a primary function of this qualification is to ensure that educators have the competence required for independent research at higher levels. |

| PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS QUALIFICATION: |
| This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here. |
