PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:
The purpose of this qualification is to prepare a learner to operate as an Electronic Pre-press Gravure Cylinder Engraver within the printing environment. An Electronic Pre-press Gravure Cylinder Engraver engraves cylinders used in gravure printing.

A qualified learner will be able to:
  • Engrave a gravure cylinder.

    Rationale:
    An Electronic Pre-press Gravure Cylinder Engraver as a proficiency is recognised by industry as an employable skill. This occupation plays a crucial role in the printing industry as it determines the set-up of a printing press to ensure efficiency, cost-saving and ultimately, the quality of the printed product.

    Printing SA engaged with the printing industry to address the concerns regarding the competitiveness of the industry against international markets. The industry identified printing trades and occupations as scarce and critical skills in the industry.

    Electronic Pre-press Gravure Cylinder Engraver currently receive training in the workplace. However, the extent of this training cannot be measured in terms of complexity and remains unaccredited as there is no national standard or qualification that can serve as a benchmark. Training against this qualification will enjoy national recognition.

    In light of the above, this qualification will have far-reaching positive implications for those who are engaged in the trade or intend to seek employment in the trade.

    Typical learners for this qualification are school leavers, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) college graduates or employees already in the printing industry.

    Qualifying learners will receive a high standard of training and education that is occupationally aligned. Learners will further their education and obtain access to printing-related qualifications.

    Employers in the electronic Pre-press and printing industries will gain access to suitably qualified personnel. Qualifying learners will produce high-quality work through the training - commensurate to industry standards that they have received.

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
  • Submit files to the raster image processor (RIP) and according to job specifications.
  • Engrave gravure cylinder using the appropriate gravure cylinder engraving procedures.
  • Manage image carrier production queue correctly.
  • Correctly perform quality assurance processes at the appropriate times.
  • Materials used for engraving gravure cylinder are as per product specifications.
  • Handle, care for and store, clean and maintain gravure cylinder engraving equipment according to schedules.
  • Calibrate Gravure cylinder engraving equipment using appropriate techniques.
  • Adhere to all relevant safety precautions.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the gravure cylinder engraving procedure.

    Integrated formative assessment:
    The skills development providers will use the curriculum to guide them on the stipulated internal assessment criteria and weighting. They will also apply the scope of practical skills and applied knowledge as stipulated by the internal assessment criteria. This formative assessment leads to entrance into the integrated external summative assessment.

    Integrated summative assessment:
    An external integrated summative assessment, conducted through the relevant QCTO Assessment Quality partner is required to issue this qualification. The external integrated summative assessment will focus on the exit level outcomes and associated assessment criteria. An external integrated summative assessment, conducted through the relevant QCTO Assessment Quality Partner for the issuing of this qualification.

    The provider will conduct the trade test as an external summative assessment in terms of the Skills Development Act, Section 26d through an evaluation of written and practical tasks covering critical aspects in a simulated environment at an assessment centre accredited by QCTO and conducted by an assessor registered by NAMB. The assessment will take place over a minimum of 2 days. No recognition granted to candidates for those trade test tasks in which they were found not competent. If a candidate does not pass all tasks, he or she will be re-tested on all trade test categories. 

  • INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY 
    The Occupational Certificate: Electronic Pre-press Gravure Cylinder Engraver has proficiencies related to the Occupational Certificate: Electronic Pre-press Gravure Technician and is recognised by industry as an employable skill.

    The developers conducted comparison with integrated proficiencies in the qualifications of the countries the Occupational Certificate: Electronic Pre­press Gravure Technician. The said proficiencies are thus equally valid for the derived qualification.

    England:
    City and Guilds Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Pre-press and the Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Digital Pre-press very closely resemble the South African qualification.
