PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:
The purpose is to train medical doctors to be specialists in Radiation Oncology who will have comprehensive, in-depth knowledge, highly specialised technical (including diagnostic and therapeutic) skills and well-developed research skills in the field of Radiation Oncology. Learners will also acquire skills for lifelong learning, ensuring continuing self-development and development of the area.

Rationale:
The rationale for this qualification is to obtain registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a specialist clinician in the field of Radiation Oncology. The qualification aims to provide South Africa with specialist clinicians in the field of Radiation Oncology in order to provide and promote health care of the highest standard and the continual development of a high level of knowledge and expertise that is comparable with internationally set standards in the field. Society will gain specialist clinicians in the field of Radiation Oncology, leading to higher efficacy of patient care, also contributing to the prevention of disease and promotive health in the community. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
Only the fellowship of the College of Medicine of South Africa is recognised for the purpose of training Master of Medicine (MMed). Thus, Credits obtained for the same MMed in an accredited training post at another South African university are recognised if a learner is transferred from such institutions.

Entry Requirements:
The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is:
  • Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB), NQF Level 8.
    And
  • With HPCSA registration as a Medical Practitioner.

    QUALIFICATION RULES 
    This qualification comprises compulsory modules at National Qualifications Framework Level 9 totaling 480 Credits.

    Compulsory Modules Level 9:
  • Tumour pathology and general oncology, 200 Credits.
  • Radiation and Medical Oncology, 210 Credits.
  • Research Methodology, 10 Credits.
  • Research Report (mini-thesis), 60 Credits.

  • Demonstrate ability/skill to achieve the major Skills/Applied Competency of the qualification.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the embedded knowledge that underpins the end result/outcome.
  • Demonstrate ability/skill to integrate or connect our performances and to reflect on, evaluate and adopt the above competencies.
  • Apply the scientific method to research a problem/advance in Radiation Oncology.
  • Write up results and publish these in local and international journals.
  • Defend these findings at a scientific meeting/congress. 

  • ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    Integrated Assessment:
    Competence is achieved, through continuous assessment by demonstrating the ability to achieve the Exit Level Outcomes of the qualification. Internal and external evaluation is through continuous, formative assessments and formal end evaluations. Assessment documents are moderated to ensure that they conform to the scope and context of the competency as stipulated in the qualification. They are constructed in such a way that the Assessor assesses the Exit Level Outcomes applied, during the learner's activity performances, towards achieving an outcome. Assessments are designed to include confirmation of the embedded knowledge component to ensure that the Foundational Competency is achieved. Integrated assessment includes Portfolio of learning, Simulations, Work-place assessments, and written and oral examinations. 

    INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY 
    There is international comparability of this qualification mostly in the United Kingdom and Australia as set by the standard committee of the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa (CMSA). 

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    This qualification allows possibilities for both vertical and horizontal articulation.

  • Master of Medicine, NQF Level 9.
  • Master of Science, NQF Level 9.

    Vertical Articulation:
  • Doctor of Medicine: Radiation Oncology, NQF Level 10.
  • Doctor of Philosophy: Radiation Oncology, NQF Level 10.
