PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:
The Master of Medicine in Surgery will enable learners to practice the base specialty of general surgery, where there are no subspecialties he/should will be able to tackle basic vascular surgery, cardiothoracic emergencies, urological emergencies, trauma, and related matters. The learner will be able to work as an independent specialist surgeon to tackle all cases requiring general surgery approach. The learner will also be able to transfer knowledge in a formal and informal settings. In a formal setting the learner will be able to teach at undergraduate and Postgraduate setting. The learner will be able to appraise research done by others and be able to conduct inquiry and research. The learner will have a solid foundation to publish research, write chapters in books, and publish books.

Rationale:
The current pool of specialist surgeon is unable to cope with the increasing disease burden and population increase.

The Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) regulates and monitors the qualification for the training requirements for the learners who wish to enrol for the examinations of fellowship qualification College of Medicine of South Africa (CMSA) to specialised in General Surgery and do Master of Medicine simultaneously. The learners shall be predominantly South Africans, the post-primary Degree to Bachelor Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBHCB). The Master of Medicine in Surgery is a requirement for specialist qualification Familial Chylomicronemia Syndrome (FCS) from the College of Medicine of Republic of South Africa. This will be mutually beneficial for both the learners and the community. On completion of the qualification, learners can apply to register as a Specialist Surgeon with the regulating body.

The qualification allows the learners to practice as a general surgeon; there is a great need for these professionals in the public and private sector as the number of vacant posts available for general surgeons in the public sector is close to 80%. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
Only FCS from the College of Medicine of SA is recognised for the purpose of doing Master of. Medicine in General Surgery with a research component.

Entry Requirements:
The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is:
  • Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor Surgery (MBCHB), NQF Level 8.
    And
  • Post Internship training.
    And
  • Post community service.
    And
  • Registration with the Health Professional Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an independent medical practitioner.

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    Integrated Assessment:
    The learner must write the primary, intermediate and final examinations of the College of Medicine of South Africa for Fellowship in General Surgery. They will qualify for Master of Medicine in General Surgery with a research component. The research work has to be produced as a mini dissertation, which has to be approved by the Hospital/University authority to collect data, ethics committee to see that it is ethical research and Higher Degree Committee to see that formats of research are followed and standard of write- up is maintained. 

    INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY 
    The qualification is comparable to qualifications or best practice standards offered in other parts of the world, i.e. United States of America, Canada, United Kingdom COMESA, SADAC and Australia (FRCS), etc.
