PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION
Purpose:
The Bachelor of Sport and Leisure Management qualification provides the depth of theory and level of application needed to inform professional practice in the management of business environments in sport and leisure contexts. The core discipline is business and management studies, with supporting disciplinary knowledge from sport and leisure studies and psycho-social studies. This ensures a well-rounded learner who is able to use their knowledge to lead and manage in any business environment. With sport and leisure studies as a stream in the qualification, learners will be able to apply their knowledge to the management of sport or leisure businesses in a range of contexts. The integration of the knowledge fields means that learners will be able to lead others, apply management skills, call on current and relevant theories and principles of business.

Qualifying learners will also be able to critically respond to the industries they serve, demonstrating the conceptual, applied and reflexive knowledge which informs the management of business in sport or professional practice. Educated with the latest theories and principles of business management along with knowledge from psycho-social studies, learners will be able to apply their knowledge to a range of sport or leisure contexts, working with and leading others and demonstrating the attributes needed to manage individuals or teams and to administer and run qualifications, clubs or facilities, in a range of contexts.

Thus the qualifying learner is able to:
  • Demonstrate comprehensive and integrated knowledge of theories and principles of management and how they are applied to the business of sport.
  • Apply project management knowledge and skills to the business of sport and sporting events.
  • Apply current theories and principles of leadership to the management of individuals and teams.
  • Apply relevant psycho-social and socio-cultural knowledge to leadership and management.
  • Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of sports, sport structures and the business of sport, showing a deep understanding the contexts in which they function.

    Rationale:
Global sport events such as the Olympics, the Commonwealth Games, Rugby and FIFA World Cup games, all point to sport being a global business with massive spectator-value along with its associated sport and leisure tourism. Annual South African events like the Comrades and Two-Ocean Marathons, Cape Argus Cycle Tour and The Epic, are examples of events that brings sport tourism to South Africa. Such events also bring the demand for qualified, sport and leisure professionals, and, as a result, the establishment of internationally recognised professional bodies such as IC REPS (International Confederation of Registers of Exercise Professionals), South Africa's professional body for fitness professionals; REPSSA, and the recently established Coaches Association of South Africa (CASA), under the auspices of SASCOC (the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee) has been established.

In terms of skills and the education and training for sport, recreation and fitness (SRF), the sub-sector is quality assured by CATHSSETA (Culture, Arts, Tourism, Hospitality & Sport, Sector Education and Training Authority). CATHSSETA is also responsible for skills in the travel and tourism sub-sector as well as the hospitality sub-sector, CATHSSETA's 2017 Sector Skills Plan, shows that the tourism and travel sub-sector is one of the key contributors to the economy of South Africa, with a direct contribution to the GDP. According to CATHSSETA, the Commonwealth Games are expected to contribute R11 billion to South Africa's GDP, bringing 10, 000 new jobs. CATHSSETA's 2017 Annual Skills Plan defines SRF as including sporting activities, sport federations, sporting facilities, clubs and sports academies, promotion and management of sporting events amusement parks, recreational activities, recreation parks, beaches, fairs, shows and facilities, and health and wellbeing centres including hydros, spas and fitness centres (CATHSSETA, 2017). Many of the jobs within this sector carry risk for participation, from beginning participants to experienced athletes, calling for qualified professionals who know how to determine such risks and manage participation, based on well-defined risks for sport and exercise participation (American College of Sports Medicine, 2017).

Thus, there is a call for many professionals with the knowledge and skills needed for the emerging SRF industries, where leadership and management skills can be expressed in a variety of contexts. Such skilled professionals are needed to manage business environments and to lead individuals and teams in a range of contexts associated with the sport and leisure business contexts.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the competitive environment of sport is continuously at risk from unethical practices that threaten fair sport participation. Journalism has exposed illegal drug use, doping, match fixing and its illegal gambling practices within sport. Thus, there is a need for athletes, coaches and managers who are concerned about fair sport, about ethical practice and who support the World Anti-Doping Agency's mission to "lead a collaborative worldwide movement for doping-free sport" (World Anti-Doping Agency, 2017). The world of sport management needs professionals who understand governance in sport, integrating their knowledge of business, finance and law to the management of sport and leisure businesses and to the management of individuals and teams within sporting environments. This qualification has been designed to meet such demands, providing the scarce skills needed in the international sport and leisure industries as well as the critical skills required to manage individuals, teams and businesses in a local and international context.

On successful completion of the qualification, learners can pursue further studies via a Postgraduate Diploma or Honours at NQF Level 8 and in the specialised fields of sport, recreation and leisure management.

This qualification will appeal to learners who wish to work in the field of sport, recreation and leisure. Learners can use their knowledge and skills of business management and event management in these contexts. The knowledge of this qualification is also transferable to other business qualifications. The qualification will appeal to those who wish to work in the world of sport or in the leisure industry where management skills are in demand in fitness facilities, recreation or leisure facilities, sport clubs, health and wellness spas, and hotels.
