PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:
The primary purpose of this qualification is to provide qualifying learners with applied competence in the analysis, interpretation, and application of Sport Science principles in the Fitness and Health, Coaching, and Teaching sectors of the Sport Industry. The Learner should be able to take strategic decisions in the context of Sport Science, and to assess any internal or external decision impacting on Sport Science. The learner should further be able to reflect on his/her scientific decisions and applications to assess the effect thereof in the holistic context of Sport Science as practice. The qualification also serves to consolidate and deepen the learner's expertise in Sport Science and to develop research capacity in the methodology and techniques of Sport Science. This qualification demand a high level of theoretical engagement and intellectual independence.

Rationale:
There is a need for qualified professionals in the field of Sport Science in South Africa. This qualification has been designed to address the expressed need and aims to develop professionals and enable them to apply their knowledge and skills in this field. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Recognition of Prior Learning:
Recognition of Prior Learning in case of learners not complying with the formal entry requirements will be conducted in accordance with the policy and guidelines of the university concerning the recognition of other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning experience. Recognition takes place only where prior learning corresponds with the required NQF level, and in terms of applied competencies relevant to the content and outcomes of the qualification. Through Recognition of Prior Learning, learners may gain access, advanced placement, or recognition of status, on condition that they continue their studies at this university.

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    The following Associated Assessment Criteria will be used in an integrated manner across the Exit Level Outcomes:
  • Develop applied competence in the analysis, interpretation and application of sport science principles in the Fitness and Health-, Coaching- And Teaching Sectors of the Sport Industry.
  • Take strategic decisions in the context of Sport Science and to assess any internal or external decision impacting on Sport Science.
  • Reflect on his/her scientific decisions and applications to assess the effect thereof in the holistic context of Sport Science as practice.

    Integrated Assessment:
    The assessment methods in this qualification are essays, computer-based assessments, theory tests, cases and open problems, practicals and interpretative skills evaluation, reporting on practicals and applications, presentations, analysis and problem solving assessment in the specific field of Sport Science. The research module is assessed against specific criteria to provide evidence of research capacity in the methodology and techniques in Sport Science. The assessment methods are selected to suit the related learning outcomes, high level of theoretical engagement and intellectual independence and governed by decisions about its purpose, validity and relevance. A range of assessment methods are applied to cater for different learning styles of the diverse student population studying Sport Science.

    There are similar international qualifications, but individual institutions have unique offerings which may not articulate with this qualification entirely. There is undoubtedly synergy in courses with variations ranging from slight to extreme synergy-depending on the institution.
