PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:
This qualification is for learners who want to proceed with Mathematics beyond the Undergraduate level, for the purpose of teaching and other relevant professions. In addition, for learners who intend pursuing higher research Degrees, the deeper level of knowledge provided in the qualification is essential for future research.

Rationale:
This qualification provides an initial Postgraduate training and is therefore important for developing skills for the country.

    Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcomes:
    1. Demonstrate a coherent and critical understanding of the theory, research methodologies and techniques relevant to Mathematics.
    2. Relate theory to practice and vice versa and think epistemologically.
    3. Identify, analyse and deal with complex problems and issues drawing systematically and creatively on the theory, research methods and literature.
    4. Apply advanced information retrieval and processing skills to identify, critically analyse, synthesise and independently evaluate quantitative data.
    5. Undertake a study of the literature and current research in Statistics.
    6. Produce a relevant research report under supervision, which meets the standards of scholarly/professional writing.
    7. Demonstrate ability to present and communicate the results of the research to a general Mathematical audience.

    Integrated Assessment:
    Assessment methods for this qualification include presentations, tutorials, practical, test assessments and written examinations. Written examinations are assessed internally by the course lecturer and thereafter externally moderated. Formative feedback is given when the project supervisor provides written feedback on pre-submission drafts of the project. Staff and learners provide additional formative assessment during student presentations. Summative assessment is conducted after completion of the project. The candidate will submit a written report on the project. The supervisor, followed by an independent external moderation process, will assess this project internally. A final assessment mark is given after completion and submission of the research project. 

    INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY 
    This qualification, in terms of the content, is comparable to similar qualifications offered by other universities nationally and internationally.
