PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
This qualification typically follows a Bachelor's Degree, and serves to consolidate and deepen the learner expertise in a particular discipline [in this case, music, allowing, moreover, for different specialisation options within the field of music], and to develop research capacity in the methodology and techniques of that discipline [in this case, through training in research methodology and a mini-dissertation].

Rationale:
Learners will be able to demonstrate efficient skill and practical experience in musicological research at a more advanced level than that acquired in the Bachelor (BA) (Music), they will have acquired advanced knowledge and skills in their chosen BA Honours modules, and they will be able to demonstrate advanced. Knowledge and skills in their chosen specialisation option (i.e. Music Performance including orchestral and/or choral conducting, Musicology, Music Theory and Composition, Music Education, or Music Technology). It is clear that such learners would make a meaningful contribution to a range. Of private and public music sectors. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
Where applicants do not meet the minimum admission requirements, RPL may be used to grant access to the programme. RPL will be applied according to the Recognition of Prior Learning, Credit Accumulation and Transfer, and Assessment policy. This will relate to both access to the qualification as well as for credit recognition or exemption towards achieving the qualification. The institution will ensure that quality assurance processes that address the specificities of the RPL process (including applications, assessment, and reporting and management systems) are implemented; and that administrative and support systems, both prior and subsequent to RPL assessment, are in place.

    Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcomes:
  • Competence and practical experience in musicological research at a more advanced level.
  • Advanced knowledge and critical insight and their applications in their chosen subject(s) and in Research Methodology.
  • Knowledge, critical insight and practical skills with regard to a specialisation option chosen from Performance, Musicology, Music Theory and Composition, Music Education or Music Technology.

    Integrated Assessment:
    Integrated Assessment at the level of the qualification provides an opportunity for learners to show that they are able to integrate concepts, ideas and actions across exit level outcomes to achieve competence that is grounded and coherent in relation to the purpose of the qualification applied competence. Integrated Assessment in this programme use a variety of authentic assessment methods thereby showing how already demonstrated competence in individual areas can be linked and applied for the achievement of a holistic outcome as described in the exit level outcomes. It is recommended that the learner will be able to demonstrate competence by having a selection of musicians for assessment purposes.
