PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:
The purpose of the Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health is to prepare learners with the knowledge, skills and competence to identify and solve public health problems at a population level.

Rationale:
The aim of the qualification is to prepare learners for positions as public health practitioners, researchers, health educators or service coordinators, so that they may contribute to meeting the needs of promoting and ensuring the health of the population. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
The institution conducts RPL in terms of the policy and guidelines of the institution to recognise other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning and experience. In cases where learners do not comply with the formal admission requirements, the institution applies its RPL policy.

Entry Requirements:
The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is:

  • Analyse equity in health outcomes from a social determinants of health approach.
  • Describe the role of social and community factors in the onset and solution of public health problems.
  • Describe multiple targets and levels of intervention for social and behavioural science programmes.
  • Outline the key steps and procedures for the planning, implementation, and evaluation of public health programmes and interventions.

    Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 6:
  • Outline health research problems, purpose and/or objectives, methodology and literature review in either a research proposal, narrative literature review, circumscribed study, a policy analysis or a strategic plan.

    Integrated Assessment:

    Formative assessment is done at a modular level and modules use a variety of assessment strategies including individual assignments, group work, tests etc.

    Summative assessment is in the format of an overarching research report that either describes a problem in context (narrative literature review) or a plan to explore a problem of public health interest (research proposal) or a limited circumscribed study, or a policy analysis or a strategic plan.

    This qualification compares with similar international qualifications in terms of the range of competencies in the learning content offered.
