PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
To equip learners as advanced, Doctoral-Level, producers of scholarly knowledge in the discipline and Profession of Anthropology.

Rationale:
This qualification enables learners to develop in-depth knowledge of the principles, major theories and paradigms, and methods of Anthropology as a holistic and critical academic discipline. They will develop an advanced research competency that involves the capacity to independently plan, implement and manage the research process, to write a research proposal and a Doctoral thesis that reflects the ability to engage in scholarly debates in the generation of knowledge in Anthropology. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
Learners who do not meet the minimum entry requirements may be admitted to the qualification through RPL.

Entry Requirements:
A Master's Degree in Anthropology or related field, Level 9.

The qualification consists of a research proposal module and a thesis to the value of 360 Credits.

    Students completing this programme are expected to demonstrate:
    1. Demonstrate a coherent and critical understanding of relevant theories in Anthropology and related fields.
    2. Rigorously critique and evaluate current research in the discipline of Anthropology and related fields.
    3. Identify, analyse and contextualise local, national and global Anthropological issues.
    4. Engage in Anthropological fieldwork, in an ethical manner.
    5. Apply an advanced skill in information retrieval and processing.
    6. Rigorously participate and engage in scholarly debates in a selected area of Anthropology.
    7. Undertake a research project and apply relevant research methods and techniques in an independent and innovative manner.
    8. Produce a research-based thesis which meets the standards of professional writing.
    9. Engage in continual critical self-reflection.
    10. Manage complex tasks autonomously, professionally and ethically. 

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcomes:
  • Collect, analyse, organise and critically evaluate literature as well as fieldwork generated data.
  • Use technology effectively, critically and ethically.
  • Communicate research effectively to a variety of audiences, including communities where research is conducted, professional and academic associations and government and non-government organisations.
  • Explain and disseminate research findings and outcomes on a multi,-inter and trans-disciplinary Level.
  • Explain the world as a set of related systems with long standing inequalities created through Colonial and Western systems of knowledge, and economic systems.

    Integrated Assessment:
    Assessment of the thesis will be conducted by three examiners, of whom at least one will be an international examiner with an in-depth knowledge of the field and with a proven record of research. 

  • INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY 
    Unisa forms part of an internationally recognised accreditation system whereby university qualifications are evaluated against international comparators and accredited accordingly; for example, Unisa's qualifications are accredited in the International Handbook of Universities and in the Commonwealth Universities' Yearbook.
