PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION
Purpose:
The purpose of this qualification is to prepare a learner to operate as an Extrusion Machine Setter. Extrusion Machine Setter optimally sets-up the extruder and relevant auxiliary equipment to manufacture components according to specifications.

A qualified learner will be able to:
  • Remove and install moulds, dies and forming devices and auxiliary equipment according to the procedure.
  • Manufacture plastic products.
  • Conduct operational maintenance and coordinate major maintenance on machines, equipment and tools following specifications.
  • Conduct trials on new moulds die and forming devices and materials to determine process parameters.

    Rationale:
This qualification is one of the newly revised Plastics Manufacturing Machine Setter's specialised qualifications. This qualification is designed for learners who specialise in the Extrusion Machine setting within the plastics manufacturing sector.

The qualification is aimed at both new entrants as well as learners who have been working within the plastics manufacturing industry.

Upon completion of the qualification, learners will be able to initiate and maintain plastics manufacturing processes by:
  • Setting-up tools, die, forming device and auxiliary equipment and processes to manufacture quality plastic components.
  • Solving common problems to produce quality products to meet customer needs.
  • Interacting with others to achieve manufacturing objectives.

Furthermore, this qualification will provide learners with a foundation to pursue the other two (2) specialised qualifications within the plastics manufacturing sector, these being, Extrusion Blow Moulding and Injection Moulding Machine Setter.

Upon completion of this qualification, learners can advance their careers by taking higher-level responsibilities within their respective organisations. The responsibilities include amongst others, team leader or supervisor and can participate effectively in the plastic manufacturing industry, whether small, medium or large enterprises.

  • INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY
The South African qualification was compared to qualifications offered in New Zealand, Ireland and Australia because of comparability regarding National Qualifications Frameworks.

    New Zealand:
The New Zealand Qualifications Authority has registered several Plastics Processing qualifications ranging from NQF Level 1-4. These qualifications are clustered as The National Certificate in Plastics Processing Technology, the National Certificate in Plastics Processing Technology (Production) and the National Certificate in Plastics Processing Technology (Technical) offered by Competenz.

Extrusion was found to be one of the 'strands' or areas of specialisations found in all the three qualifications mentioned above. Learners who pursue this strand, are required to do all the core unit standards that will build their knowledge and competencies on quality assurance, plastics materials, health and safety requirements and engineering skills. In addition to these, learners are required to choose unit standards related to their area of specialisation. In this case, extrusion related unit standards. The remainder of the credits will be derived from other elective unit standards of their choice.

Upon completion of their learning regarding this strand, learners will be able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of advanced extrusion tooling and change extruder screws.
  • Optimise the extrusion process and operate an extrusion process for complex products.

    Ireland:
The Plastics Extrusion (5M3074), qualification, pegged at NQF Level 5 with 120 Credits were found in the European Qualifications Framework. The First Polymer Training Skillnet offers the qualifications.

This qualification can be obtained on a full-time or part-time basis. Learners on a full-time basis can complete the qualification over a year, whilst those on a part-time basis can take two years to complete. Learners can take 4 to 6 weeks to complete each module.

Some of the modules found in the Plastics Extrusion qualification include inter alia: plastic material selection and processing, product process validation, extrusion process optimisation, extrusion process validation, extrusion machine setting. Elective modules include amongst others: plastic part design and essential mould design. The South African Plastics Manufacturing Machine Setter covers all the core modules covered in the comparative qualifications.

Similarities between the South African Extrusion Machine Setter and the qualifications offered in the countries compared to were found to be concerning the core competencies covered in core modules and also in terms of competencies covered in modules for the extrusion 'strand' levels at which the modules, as well as the qualifications, are pegged. Provision is also made for areas of specialisation within the South African context as opposed to 'strands' in the other countries. Lastly, learners who complete the qualifications or courses will be expected to operate in a specific workplace of their choice within the plastics industry.

    Differences:
Differences have been noted in terms of the design or packaging of the South African Extrusion Machine Setter qualification. Within the South African context, this is a specialised qualification within the plastics manufacturing sector.

Differences have also been noted with the credits allocated to individual qualifications. The South African Extrusion Machine Setter qualification has 299 credits because of the inclusion of NQF Level 2, 3 and 4 modules or learning units in the qualification. This is higher compared to the credits of qualifications offered in other countries.

Differences have also been noted with regards to the learning duration. The South African Extrusion Machine Setter qualification is offered over three (3) years. This allows progression from lower-level learning programmes, that is, from NQF Level 2, to the ultimate exit level, which is pegged at NQF Level 5. Whereas, in New Zealand and Ireland, the exit level is upon completion of the qualification.

    Conclusion:
In comparison, the South African qualification covers competencies that are contained in Plastics Manufacturing related qualifications offered in other countries. It is therefore concluded that the Extrusion Machine Setter qualification favourably compares to qualifications offered in other countries.
