PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:
The purpose of the qualification is to contribute to the development of learners to gain knowledge and advanced understanding of theory and research in the fields of Criminology, that will enable them to explore a variety of critical issues relating to deviance, conflict, crime and victimisation in order to enhance safety in society.

Rationale:
The qualification develops competent research ability and critical thinking within the field and to critically appraise existing knowledge of deviance, crime and victimisation by conducting independent research in a specialised area of deviance, conflict, crime and victimisation through report research findings in a scientific manner by applying gained knowledge to develop entrepreneurial possibilities. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
The institution accepts the principle underlying outcomes-based, source-based and life-long learning, in which considerations of articulation and mobility play a significant role, and subscribes to the view that Recognition of Prior Learning, whether acquired by formal education curricula at this or another institution or informally (by experience) is an indispensable element in deciding on admission to and awarding credits in an explicitly selected teaching-learning qualification of the institution. An applicant who falls outside of the formal qualifications system, but who can demonstrate (through the production of substantial and satisfactory evidence) experiential or work-based learning or a non-formal qualification (or a combination), may be considered for admission and/or for the Recognition of Prior Learning for the achievement of the qualification in part or in full. An applicant who after such assessment, is deemed to have sufficient potential, but is in need of further academic development, must be directed to other suitable learning qualifications prior to admission or to parallel qualifications after admission.

The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is the:

    This qualification consists of the following compulsory modules at National Qualifications Framework Level 8 totalling 128 Credits.

    Compulsory Modules, Level 8, 96 Credits:
  • Forensic Criminology, 16 Credits.
  • Theoretical perspectives of conflict, crime, victimisation and criminal justice, 16 Credits.
  • Victimology in Africa, 16 Credits.
  • Applied Research Methodology in Criminological Sciences, 16 Credits.
  • Research Paper: Criminology, 32 Credits.

    Elective Modules, Level 8, 32 Credits (Choose ONE):
  • Development, Communication and Culture 1, 32 Credits.
  • Genders, Sexualities, Cultures and Histories, 32 Credits. 

  • EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES 
    1. Develop conceptual base for research.
    2. Conceptualise and integrate theoretical work, and.
    3. Show a critical understanding and knowledge within the field of conflict, crime, deviance and victimisation. 

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    The following Associated Assessment Criteria will be used in an integrated manner across the Exit Level Outcomes:
  • Demonstrate ability to conduct independent research.
  • Comprehend and critically discuss theoretical and core debates concerning crime, victimisation and justice in South Africa with the development of problem solving skills.

    Integrated Assessment:
    The achievement of learning outcomes will be assessed through the various assessment instruments. These include full-length literature reviews; integrated theoretical and empirical research assignments, oral presentations and the development of a research proposal together with an application for ethical approval and the execution of an independent research project of limited scope. Formative assessment (50%) comprises of written assignments and oral seminar presentations whilst examination and research project which are externally moderated form part of summative assessment (50%). 

  • INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY 
    This qualification is comparable with similar qualifications offered in various higher education institutions internationally.

    This qualification allows for both vertical and horizontal articulation options:
