PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:
The purpose of this qualification is to address and equip learners with more advanced knowledge in the Construction Management discipline and enable them to apply that knowledge, skills and values to make a meaningful contribution to the economy and national development by ensuring optimal utilisation of resources.

A learner achieving this qualification will be able to continue their professional development through the inculcation of a deep and systematic understanding of current thinking, practice, theory and methodology in the Construction Management area of specialisation by independently integrating construction management related principles, applying them in appropriate ways and analysing and solving more broadly defined open ended tactical problems in running construction projects.

Learners will develop the knowledge, cognitive, professional and general construction management competencies in:

  • Project budget management.
  • Financial skills.
  • Construction technology.
  • Business management.
  • Safety, Health and Environmental Management and Legislation.

    Rationale:
    The Advanced Diploma in Construction Management qualification is designed to provide access to learners who have completed Diploma studies to further their studies at advanced level. The qualification will add value to the marketability of especially first time job seekers who have completed a Diploma at a Higher Education Institution level. This is in line with the national need for built environment development and provisioning. Diplomats will add value to the site supervisory/middle management field in a more practical manner. This qualification relates to the needs of industry, which aim to provide competent persons able to liaise with clients, architects, engineers, local authorities, sub-contractors and suppliers.

    The industry representatives from the East Cape Master of Builder Association (MBA) participated in the development of the qualification and agreed to the proposed routes of for qualifying learners.

    Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
    RPL will not be used in this programme as the knowledge and skills level required cannot be measured via experience alone.

    The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is:

  • A 3-year Diploma in Construction Management.
  • A 360 Credits Degree in Construction Management.

    This qualification consists of compulsory modules at National Qualifications Framework (NQF) Level 7 totalling 120 Credits.

    1. Use project management as an operational tool to complete a construction projects as per industry norm.
    2. Interpret and implement various forms of building contracts with due consideration of related business management principles, and the aspect of professional ethics and conduct business management principles, and the aspect of professional ethics and conduct as well as dispute resolutions by interpreting contract documentation.
    3. Conduct a feasibility study and compile an implementable project budget in the built environment.
    4. Apply financial skills in the calculation of and preparation of payment certificates, escalation, variations and final accounts.
    5. Apply knowledge and skills of alternative construction technologies and green methodologies relative to materials, methods and techniques used for low income housing in developing countries via case studies.
    6. Apply business management and entrepreneurial skills that are required in the construction and allied industries.

    Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 1:
  • Planning, organising, leading and control are implemented for a construction project.
  • Project management techniques are incorporated in a project plan.
  • Computer applications are integrated in the programming and scheduling of construction projects.

    Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 2:
  • Construction project contracts are interpreted and implemented according to legal aspects and legislation, business management principles, professional ethics and conduct by means of an analytical report.
  • Contract documentation is interpreted to provide a scenario for dispute and conflict resolution.

    Associated Assessment Criteria Exit for Level Outcome 4:
  • Financial skills are applied in arithmetically calculating and preparing payment certificates, escalation, variations and final accounts.

    Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 5:
  • The project plan alternative and appropriate construction technologies are incorporated.
  • Alternative green methodologies are included in materials identification and technique selection in the project plan.
  • The needs of low income housing, social housing and rental housing are considered in identification and selection of alternative technologies and green methodologies for the housing delivery.

  • A feasible business idea is identified.
  • Business management, entrepreneurial and financial principles are applied in developing a business plan.

  • A critical understanding and appreciation of the roles of H&S culture, management commitment, worker participation and the causes of incidents and accidents in H&S performance is demonstrated in the plan development.

    Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 7:
  • A Health and Safety (H&S) program that ensures compliance with legislation and mitigates incidents is developed for implementation.
  • A critical understanding and appreciation of the roles of H&S culture, management commitment, worker participation and the causes of incidents and accidents in H&S performance is demonstrated in the plan development.

    Integrated Assessment:
    Integrated Assessment at the level of the qualification provides an opportunity for learners to show that they are able to integrate concepts, ideas and actions across this qualification to achieve competence that is grounded and coherent with the purpose of this qualification. Integrated assessment will show how already demonstrated competence in individual areas can be linked and applied for the achievement of a holistic outcome as described in the Exit Level Outcomes.

    Integrated Assessment will judge the quality of the observable performance, and also the quality of the reasoning that lies behind it. Assessments tools will encourage learners to give an account of the thinking and decision-making that underpin their demonstrated performance.

    Formative and summative assessments will include the following:

  • Construction Management simulations and tests as a basis on which to provide formative feedback on knowledge gaps, skills application and possible ways of improvement.
  • Research assignments to provide formative feedback on different aspects of the student's learning.

    Summative:
  • Individual assignments.
  • Group assignments.
  • Case study analyses and presentations. Examinations (closed book).

    The above summative opportunities will be used to determine and grade a student's ability to demonstrate the learning outcomes.

    Sound Achievement in Year 12 English and Mathematics is strongly recommended. (This qualification is offered at a lower level and at completion the candidate will be able to enrol for a Bachelor in Construction at the University of Southern Queensland).

    Qualification purpose:
    In this course you will gain advanced knowledge of building projects to allow you to provide advisory, administrative and management services for the construction of large, high-rise and complex buildings. You will learn to apply structural principles, assess faults, apply building codes and standards, and manage compliance with legal obligations. You may also gain the skills required to administer project contracts and certify timing, quality and cost matters.

    Qualification outcomes:
  • Analyse and evaluate OHS risk
  • Apply building codes and standards to the construction process for large building projects.
  • Establish, maintain and review contract administration procedures and frameworks.
  • Manage processes for complying with legal obligations of a building or construction contractor.

    Assessment approach Observation:
    An educator will directly observe your performance of activities in a real or simulated workplace, role play or exercise, or a demonstration of practical skills.

    Written assessment:
    Written assessments can take a number of forms including case studies, assignments, projects, workbooks, presentations, reports, reflective tasks, self evaluation, and research projects. Your educator will indicate what kind of written assessment you are expected to submit for each unit.

    Questioning:
    Questioning could take the form of written question and answers, such as examinations, tests or online quizzes. It could also be spoken questions and answers.

    Portfolio:
    A portfolio is a collection of evidence of your skills. This could include collections of samples of your work, observation checklists, third-party reports, products with supporting documentation, historical evidence, training records, and journals, logbooks or work diaries.

    Third-party feedback is information we gather from the people training or supervising you throughout your studies.     The Trent Global College Advanced Diploma qualification is a 1 year Full Time/Part Time qualification specially designed to enable graduates engineers, architects and other related professionals with an interest in pursuing a career as a construction/project manager to expand their skills and knowledge needed by the industry.
    The main objective of the qualification is to develop competent construction managers who will have the skills to effectively manage projects in the construction market. This qualification is highly intensive, with a total of 10 modules.

    Admission to the Postgraduate Diploma in Construction requires you to have a three year Bachelor of Construction Degree, Graduate Diploma in Technology with an endorsement in Construction Management or Quantity Surveying, or a learner qualification.

    Qualification purpose:
    The Postgraduate Diploma in Construction has a focus on energy management and healthy buildings and is the only university course that looks at indoor air quality, healthy building and energy issues.

    Qualification outcomes:
    Massey University's Postgraduate Diploma in Construction gives you the opportunity to join the pathway to in-depth research at a Masters level.
    The qualification gives you the opportunity to show your analytical thinking and high-level research capability. If you complete the qualification at a satisfactory level you may be able to proceed to the Master of Construction. If so, credits you have gained through this qualification may be credited to the Masters qualification.
