PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The purpose of this qualification is to prepare persons to make a contribution, through research, to understand the application and evaluation of existing knowledge in a specialised area of dental technology. They will demonstrate a high level of overall application, analysis, synthesis and evaluation in that area, ranging from fundamental concepts to advanced theoretical concepts and application of knowledge.

Background:
  • Dental technology is a dynamic field and depends on current technological research and the advancement of technology.
  • This qualification runs parallel to academic research and provides the groundwork for providing learners with appropriate research capabilities to develop and advance dental technology.
  • This qualification is not limited to, but is pivotal in supporting academic dental research by developing the technology needed to conduct new academic research.
  • The duration of this qualification is a minimum study period of one year and a maximum period of five years.

    1. Analyse and evaluate information (C) (10 Credits) NQF Level 8.

    Six:
    1. Facilitate the transfer of technological knowledge within academic institutions (C) (10 Credits) NQF Level 8.

    3. Information is synthesised into a coherent unit.
    4. Information is gathered mostly independently of the supervisor.

    Three:
    1. Appropriate theory and methods are chosen and described.
    2. The choices of methods and theories are explained and justified.

    Four:
    1. The design is translated into practical application.
    2. The design works in practice.
    3. Observations made are consistently and accurately recorded.
    4. The design and performance are evaluated and suggestions put forward for improvement.

    Five:
    1. Information is appropriately categorised.
    2. Information is translated into appropriate forms.
    3. Information is evaluated, resulting in informed, innovative recommendations concerning the research being put forward.

    Six:
    1. The dissertation is coherently written and laid out according to national and institutional guidelines for level.
    2. A paper, which the learner/student has substantially contributed to, is accepted by an accredited or authoritative journal.
    3. Peer learning is facilitated through oral and poster presentations and/or seminars.
    4. Learning by junior students is facilitated.
