PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION
Purpose:
The Bachelor of Sport Science and Management aims to provide a unique blend of practical application and theory which immerses learners into the sociological, pedagogical and scientific aspects of sport science and sport management.

The theoretical underpinnings of this qualification have a core discipline of sport science and the management aspects play a supportive role which allows the learner to apply this knowledge base in a practical context. This symbiotic relationship that exists between sport science and management complements one another and will produce a learner that is holistically skilled and educated in the fields of sport science and management.

Qualifying learners will be able to:
  • Evaluate and apply strategic sport marketing principles in the national and international sporting environment.
  • Interpret and apply the theoretical understanding of the sciences in relation to sport performance.
  • Identify and apply theoretical sport media communication skills within a working environment.
  • Practically implement theoretical principles of coaching, health and wellness and conditioning.
  • Evaluate cross-cultural perspectives within societies, and promote equality and diversity.
  • Implement processes and techniques needed to effectively engage in a sport research project.

This qualification provides sport practitioners with the opportunity to enhance and develop quality in their professional practice and prepare them for the world of sport science and the management of sport. Learners will engage in project-based learning experiences that promote and encourage analysis of performance and critical reflection on current sport trends. They will develop expertise and knowledge in leadership, management and relationship building, as well as gain an understanding of the fundamental principles of science and practice which will serve as a theoretical platform for professional practice.

    Rationale:
The sport industry is a growing market in South Africa and there are many potential areas for job creation. There is a drive from the government, South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) and the Department of Sport and Recreation to develop and improve various sporting codes especially in rural or previously disadvantaged areas. This will be done through the creation of various performance centres for the development of several sporting codes and to identify future talent. There is thus a need for qualified sport science and management graduates who are able to develop and implement various community engagement qualifications to fit in with the goals of government and the further development of communities.

In 2012, SASCOC embarked on an action plan to create "an active and winning nation" through the development of the National Sports and Recreation Plan. This plan has highlighted the need to increase the number of suitably skilled and qualified sports practitioners to meet the human resource and capacity needs of the sports sector as one of their strategic goals to transform Sport in South Africa. Working relationships with the Department of Sport and Recreation, SASCOC and the Sharks Academy centres on the development of qualifications to meet societal needs and it is clear that there is high demand for innovative and well educated sports practitioners in all sectors of the sport industry. Relevant scientific and managerial content has been developed to ensure a unique blend of practical application and theory which immerses learners into the sociological, pedagogical and scientific aspects of sport science and sport management.

  • INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY
An environmental analysis was conducted that included international sport science and management qualifications, this was used in the design of the new qualification to ensure that best practices were adopted, and those no longer relevant were excluded.

There are a wide range of international institutions that offer a qualification in Sport Science/Sport Science and Management. Qualifications and best practices in America, United Kingdom and Australia were compared. Benchmarking revealed that many institutions offer a Degree for graduates wishing to gain knowledge or specialise in sport science/sport science and management.

The reasons for selecting these countries are as follows:
  • The United Kingdom (UK) has a rich sporting heritage. Many different sports such as football, rugby and field hockey originated in this region. In addition, the UK has had major success in various international competitions which is due to effective high performance qualifications supported by good administrative and management practices in sport.
  • The United States of America (USA) has a strong culture of sport and have a wide range of different institutions that offer either sport science or sport management qualifications. Professional and college sport is one of the largest industries in the USA and thus many institutions are leaders in sport science, sport management and marketing practices through research outputs. In addition, the USA is one of the leading countries in the world in developing sporting talent through effective high performance qualifications. Their achievements in major sporting competitions are a testament of their effectiveness and successful practices.
  • Sport participation and sport spectating is a major component of Australian culture. This includes both organised and recreation sport. Australia has excelled at many sports in major competitions and this is due to effective and successful high performance qualifications.
