Registered-data under construction

The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The qualification aims to o provide learners with basic training in research methods and procedures appropriate to the discipline concerned. Also, the qualification provides learners for the economy with the capacity to work in teams which must research the discipline concerned. The qualification aims to produce learners with the opportunity to do a doctoral qualification. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Entry Requirements:
The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is:
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering, NQF Level 8.

    1. Be exposed to basic epistemological issues and research methods.
    2. Identify the theoretical issues about the proposal.
    3. Develop appropriate methods to address the questions. 

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    The following associated assessment criteria apply across all Exit Level Outcomes:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of epistemological and method issues in the dissertation.
  • Write a research proposal.
  • Execute a literature review.
  • Frame precise research questions.
  • Select or devise appropriate research methods.
  • Execute the research.
  • Analyse the results critically.
  • Write up the research.

    Integrated Assessment:
    In the case of part coursework, part dissertation, where the outcome of the coursework is sufficient theoretical understanding to undertake the research, both summative and formative evaluation methods are used for the coursework (examinations and projects). The evaluation of the dissertation is formative and synoptically evaluates all outcomes. In the case of the degrees by dissertation only, the evaluation of the dissertation is formative and synoptically evaluates all results. In each case, examiners submit formal reports on the thesis, which are made available to the candidate.

    This qualification compares with the following international qualifications in terms of the range of competencies in the learning content offered. 

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    This qualification offers both possibilities of horizontal and vertical articulation.

  • Master of Industrial Administration, NQF Level 9.

    Vertical Articulation:
  • Doctor of Science in Engineering, NQF Level 10.
