Registered-data under construction

The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The diploma provides specialised training in performance. The diploma will equip the learners with the ability to perform at a high level as a soloist or chamber musician or accompanist. It will prepare the candidate for employment in arts and media-related professions or for possible further, independent research for the DMus by Performance and Thesis. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
The institution conducts RPL in terms of the policy and guidelines of the institution to recognise other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning and experience. In cases where learners do not comply with the formal admission requirements, the institution applies its RPL policy.

Entry Requirements:
The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is:
  • Advance Diploma in Music, NQF Level 7.

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    The following associated assessment criteria apply across all Exit Level Outcomes:
  • Familiar with contemporary theoretical issues in musicological studies;
  • Apply a range of advanced research methods to research problems in musicology;
  • Conduct advanced literature searches and critique current literature in the form of a review;
  • Perform publicly as a soloist or as a member of an ensemble;
  • Write research and funding proposals.

    Integrated Assessment:
  • Literature review;
  • Use of appropriate methods of data collection and analysis;
  • Integration of findings;
  • Appreciation of the limits of the study;
  • Use of the publication and style conventions of the discipline;
  • The practical component is assessed through a series of public performances which will include solo and ensemble work.
  • The performances are subject to external examination. 

  • INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY 
    This qualification compares with the following international qualifications in terms of the range of competencies in the learning content offered. 

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    This qualification offers both possibilities of horizontal and vertical articulation.

    Horizontal Articulation:
  • Bachelor of Music Honours, NQF Level 8.
  • Bachelor of Music in Dance, NQF Level 8.

    Vertical Articulation:
  • Master of Music in Dance, NQF Level 9.
