PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

BY COMPOSITION
This programme provides the opportunity for a candidate, under the guidance of an approved supervisor, to compose a large-scale work which shows evidence of musical imagination, master of technique and creative ability of the highest order.

BY PUBLISHED WORK
There are two possibilities here for a candidate to receive recognition of original published work:
a) published book, or composition, or extensive portfolio of compositions
b) public performance of original music.

BY PERFORMANCE AND THESIS
The two components of this doctorate are designed to provide the opportunity for a candidate, under the guidance of an approved supervisor, to show evidence of the ability to perform in public, and to prove musicological research through mature study of high quality which, by virtue of original thought and clear insight into the relevant subject matter, constitutes a distinguished contribution to musical knowledge.

BY PERFORMANCE AND COMPOSITION
The two components of this doctorate are designed to provide the opportunity for a candidate, under the guidance of an approved supervisor, to show evidence of the ability to perform in public, musical imagination, master of technique and creative ability of the highest order.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

A Bachelor of Music degree or a qualification recognised by Senate as the equivalent to the examinations prescribed for the Bachelor of Music or Master of Music degree of the University.

a) Critical cross-field outcomes (generic to all teaching and learning)

(i) The DMus graduate will be able to demonstrate mastery of theoretically sophisticated subject matter;
(ii) The DMus graduate will have mastered the skills of critical thinking, problem solving, collection and analysis of data, and effective written communication.

b) General outcomes (contextually demonstrated general knowledge, skills and values of the programme)

As for the MMus, the DMus graduate will be able, at a level apposite to a doctorate, to:
(i) conduct independent research in the discipline (or inter-disciplinary field);
(ii) communicate verbally and orally with professional audiences;
(iii) apply disciplinary knowledge and research skills;
(iv) analyse and critique communications of an academic and popular nature;
(v) apply practical and theoretical knowledge as a qualified performer;
(vi) appreciate the ethical issues associated with research and knowledge production in the discipline;
(vii) challenge orthodoxies and redefine existing knowledge, while demonstrating awareness of the nature of knowledge in the field;
(viii) publish articles; present papers; contribute to conferences and public performances; attend and contribute to research seminars.

(c) Specific Outcomes, (including professional outcomes, contextually demonstrated)

The DMus graduate, at a level apposite to a doctorate, will be:
(i) familiar with contemporary theoretical issues in musicological studies;
(ii) able to apply a range of advanced research methods to research problems in musicology;
(iii) able to conduct advanced literature searches and critique current literature in the form of a review;
(iv) able to prepare professional papers for a peer review;
(v) able to perform publicly as a soloist or as a member of an ensemble;
(vi) able to write research and funding proposals.

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

(a) The achievement of these outcomes is assessed in the integrated assessment of the programme.

(b) The achievement of these outcomes is an integrated assessment of composition, or dissertation and/or practical performance apposite to the degree of DMus.

(c) Composition or dissertation, and/or public performance, monitored by external examiners and apposite to the level of doctorate.

INTEGRATED ASSESSMENT
The integration of knowledge, skills, values, attitudes are assessed as follows:
(a) a thesis, which will demonstrate original thought and clear insight such as constitutes a distinguished contribution to musical knowledge. This assessment will be made by international authorities in the area(s) of the thesis;
(b) a composition (or series of compositions), which will demonstrate evidence of musical imagination, technical mastery, and creative ability of the highest order. This assessment will be made by international authorities in the field;
(c) a practical component, for which a series of public performances will demonstrate musical prowess of international standard. International musicians are included in the assessment of this component;
(d) published work. The assessment will be made by international authorities in the area(s) of the publication.

MODERATION OPTIONS
