PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The combined composition and practical components of the degree provide training in the techniques of independent research, analysis and scholarly presentation appropriate to Music, and specialised training in performance. The degree will equip the candidate with advanced knowledge in the theoretical and practical fields of music. It will prepare the candidate for employment in arts and/or media-related professions or for further independent research for the degree of PhD in Music or DMus. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
A degree of Honours or Bachelor (four-year BMus), or an equivalent and a better than average pass in the discipline or a cognate discipline recognised by the Faculty. Candidates are normally expected to satisfy the Department of their ability to pursue independent research a the postgraduate level with proof of well researched Honours essays and a research proposal on the intended area of study.

RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
Non-Honours graduates who have shown by examination or publication or a record of appropriate training that they have reached a level in the subject or a cognate subject equivalent to an Honours bachelor's degree may be permitted to register for the degree.

(i) The MMus graduate is able to demonstrate mastery of theoretically sophisticated subject matter;
(ii) The MMus graduate is sufficiently proficient in research methodology to proceed to a PhD. Graduates have mastered the skills of critical thinking, problem solving, collection and analysis of data, and effective written communication.

The MMus graduate is able to:
(i) conduct independent research in the discipline (or inter-disciplinary field);
(ii) communicate verbally and orally with professional audiences;
(iii) apply disciplinary knowledge and research skills;
(iv) analyse and critique communications of an academic and popular nature;
(v) apply practical and theoretical knowledge as a qualified performer;
(vi) appreciate the ethical issues associated with research and knowledge production in the discipline;
(vii) challenge orthodoxies and redefine existing knowledge, while demonstrating awareness of the nature of knowledge in the field;
(viii) publish articles; present papers; contribute to conferences and public performances; attend and contribute to research seminars.

The MMus graduate by practical work and dissertation will be:

(i) familiar with contemporary theoretical issues in musicological studies;
(ii) able to apply a range of advanced research methods to research problems in musicology;
(iii) able to conduct advanced literature searches and critique current literature in the form of a review;
(iv) able to prepare professional papers for peer review;
(v) able to compose in a single large form or a variety of smaller ones;
(vi) able to offer evidence of originality of thought;
(vii) able to perform publicly as a soloist or as a member of an ensemble;
(viii) able to write research and funding proposals. 

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
(a) The achievement of these outcomes is assessed in the integrated assessment of the programme.

(b) The achievement of these outcomes is an integrated assessment of the composition and practical performances.

(c) Dissertation itself and its external examining; seminars during the course of writing the thesis; and career training, as well as practical examinations.

INTEGRATED ASSESSMENT:
The integration of skills learnt in the MMus by Practical Work and Composition is assessed by means of:

(a) the practical component is assessed through a series of public performances which will include solo and ensemble work.
(b) The portfolio of compositions which must contain at least one work for full orchestra. The composition must show competence
  • originality of thought;
  • the candidate's ability to write in either a single large form or a variety of small ones;
  • research problems formulation;
  • independent research
  • literature review;
  • appreciation of the limits of the study;
  • use of the publication and style conventions of the discipline;
  • lead to possible publication.

    The two components are subject to external examination. A progress report by the Supervisor is submitted to the Faculty Office at the end of each academic year and, if satisfactory, the candidate is permitted to re-register in the following year.
