PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The combined composition, course work and dissertation components of the degree provide training in the techniques of independent research, analysis and scholarly presentation appropriate to Music, advanced musicological studies and specialised training in composition. The degree will equip the candidate with advanced knowledge in the theoretical and creative field of music. It will prepare the candidates for employment in arts- and/or media-related professions, or for further, independent research for the degree of PhD in Music or DMus. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
A degree of honours or Bachelor (four-year BMus), or an equivalent and better than average pass in the discipline or a cognate discipline recognised by the Faculty. Candidates are normally expected to satisfy the Department of their ability to pursue independent research at the postgraduate level with proof of well researched Honours essays and a research proposal on the intended area of study.

RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
Non-Honours graduates who have shown be examination or publication or a record of appropriate training that they have reached a level in the subject or a cognate subject equivalent to an Honours bachelor's degree may be permitted to register for the degree.

(ii) The MMus graduate is sufficiently proficient in research methodology to proceed to a PhD. Graduates have mastered the skills of critical thinking, problem solving, collection and analysis of data, and effective written communication.

The MMus graduate is able to:

(i) conduct independent research in a discipline (or inter-disciplinary field);

(v) apply practical and theoretical knowledge as a composer;

(vii) challenge orthodoxies and redefine existing knowledge, while demonstrating awareness of the nature of knowledge in the field;
(viii) publish articles; present papers; contribute to conferences; attend and contribute to research seminars.

The MMus graduate by composition, coursework and minor dissertation will be:
(i) familiar with contemporary theoretical issues in musicological studies;
(ii) able to apply a range of advanced research methods to research problems in musicology;
(iii) able to conduct advanced literature searches and critique current literature in the form of a review;
(iv) able to prepare professional papers for peer review;
(v) able to compose in a single large form or a variety of smaller ones;
(vi) able to write research and funding proposals. 

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
(a) The achievement of these outcomes is assessed in the integrated assessment of the programme.

(b) The achievement of these outcomes is an integrated assessment of the composition, coursework and minor dissertation components.

(c) The minor dissertation and portfolio of compositions and its external examining; seminars during the course of writing the thesis and career training as well as the course work examination.

INTEGRATED ASSESSMENT
The integration of skills learnt in the MMus by Composition, Coursework and Minor Dissertation is assessed by means of:
(a) the portfolio of compositions which must contain at least one work for full orchestra. The composition must show competence in the following areas:
  • originality of thought;
  • the candidate's ability to write in either a single large form or a variety of small ones.
    (b) the coursework component which should be completed by the end of the first year of study. It is assessed by invigilated written examinations and candidates should demonstrate an understanding of advanced musicological studies.
    (c) A minor dissertation which need not be longer than 10,000 words. The dissertation must demonstrate competence in the following areas, all of which are assessed in the examination of the dissertation:
  • research problem formulation;
  • independent research;
  • literature review;
  • appropriate design and execution of research;
  • use of appropriate methods of data collection and analysis;
  • integration of findings;
  • appreciation of the limits of the study;
  • use of the publication and style conventions of the discipline;
  • lead to possible publication.

    The three components are subject to external examination. A progress report by the Supervisor is submitted to the Faculty Office at the end of each academic year and, if satisfactory, the candidate is permitted to re-register in the following year.
    It is not essential that the dissertation submitted by the candidate constituted a distinct contribution to knowledge in the subject not that the research project(s) undertaken necessarily be original.

    The MMus articulates with the PhD in the Faculty of Humanities. When dissertation progress is reviewed at the end of each academic year, the Faculty Board, on the recommendation of the supervisor and the Head of the Department, may recommend that the candidate's registration be upgraded to a PhD and that the period of Masters registration beyond the minimum period of one year be recognised towards the two year minimum period of study for the PhD.
