PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

This Honours programme is the first year of postgraduate study in Music. It is designed to provide the opportunity for further intensive study in Composition and training in concepts and research methods that equip the candidate with the skills necessary either for employment in arts and media-related fields, or for further study at Masters and Doctoral level in Music, or a related subject area.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

A degree of Bachelor or its equivalent with a better than average pass in the major in the discipline or a cognate discipline.

RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING (e.g. Work or field experience (if applicable)

Non-graduates who have shown by examination or publication or a record of appropriate training that they have reached a level in the subject or a cognate subject equivalent to a bachelors degree may be permitted to register for the degree.

(a) The Honours graduate is competent to:

i) Understand and manipulate qualitative and quantitative data within an area of specialisation.
ii) Design and conduct research in his or her area of specialisation
iii) Produce academic papers that reflect an ability to interrogate the professional literature and engage in critical debate;
iv) Find information of professional relevance efficiently and independently;
v) Use information-technology efficiently and independently
vi) Embark on an Honours level research study under supervisor.

(b) General outcomes (contextually demonstrated general knowledge, skills and values of the programme)

The BMus (Hons) graduate is competent to:
i) Articulate an understanding of an area of specialisation at a high level of abstraction;
ii) Independently apply discipline-based knowledge and practices to an understanding of conceptual and practical problems;
iii) Design and conduct research utilizing the methods of the discipline;
iv) Apply the theory and research methods of the discipline to the development of research questions;
v) Produce theoretical and research communications that draw on a range of information bases.

The BMus (Hons) graduate is able to:

Formulate a sophisticated argument drawing on appropriate theory and practical skills;

Produce critiques of music theory and research;

Produce a portfolio of music compositions;

Utilise advanced quantitative and qualitative methods to address research questions;

Use computer-based notational packages to prepare musical scores;

apply theoretical knowledge to an understanding of advanced musical analysis;

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

(a) The learner's achievement of critical cross-field outcomes is assessed formativley during the course through a range of activities, and summatively in the capstone activity outlined in integrated assessment.

(b) The learner's achievement of general programme outcomes is assessed through a assessments throughout the course and particularly in the capstone activity outlined under integrated assessment.

(c) Assessment include theoretical papers of an advanced musicology nature, a composition portfolio (a candidate for the degree will be encouraged to give a public presentation of the non-orchestral work(s) in his/her portfolio, and a viva voce includes the preparation of extended papers written under supervision. Summative assessments mainly take the form of the capstone composition portfolio (see integrated assessment).

INTEGRATED ASSESSMENT
The integrated assessment of the Music Honours graduate includes measurement of foundational, reflective, technical and practical competencies. Learners are required to complete a series of exercises in creative work. These serve both to integrated skills learnt during the Honours year, and to prepare for the Masters in the case of those learners who wish to continue to a Masters in Composition.

The exercises have the following components:

Production of a portfolio of compositions. One of the works must be an orchestral work;

Two coursework options, chosen from advanced analyses of contemporary musical works, advanced orchestration and electronic music;

Conducting and writing up pilot research (in a manner that accords with the publication conventions of the discipline), that is designed to be the first stage of the research to be conducted for the Masters degree; and

A viva voce where the candidates is required to take an oral examination on all work prepared during the year.
