PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The first purpose of the qualification is to provide learners without university exemption the possibility of tertiary theological training, also a s stepping stone for graduate studies.

The second purpose is to provide qualifiers with the basic knowledge, specific skills and applied competence in the essential field of theological science. It will provide the basis for continued personal intellectual growth as well as an informed lay leadership in the faith communities and society.

The third purpose of the qualification is to provide the churches of the country with significant numbers of theologically trained people qualified for further church specific training and/or induction into the ministry of the gospel.

    A person with a Diploma in Theology should be able to analyse, weigh and create basic theological viewpoints and have some skill to inform and enable members of society to apply these understandings and values in their life style.

    The candidate has to prove an ability to use and apply fundamental documents (like the Bible, historical theological formulations, etc.) when formulating own viewpoints or when acting in defence or criticism of other views on less problematic issues.

    The candidate has to provide an ability to function in an enabling way in a religious situation (like a church meeting, a pastoral consultation or a personal crisis).
