PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:
By attaining this qualification:
  • The learner would be able to play a significant role in the provision of training and facilitating as required by the Department of Basic Education and the Hospitality Industry.
  • This qualification is intended for learners seeking a focused teaching Degree with strong subject and educational theory competence.
    The qualification is an integrated qualification, where the learner holding the qualification will have the competencies (knowledge and skills) to:
  • Teach specialist subjects in the field of Hotel keeping and Catering thereby implementing outcome-based education in this field for grades 8-12.
  • Teach/act as facilitators, trainers and assessors in other Higher Education and Training (HET) institutions as well as other sectors of the Hospitality industry, e.g. WE (Workplace Education).

    Rationale:
  • Since 1994 the demand for hospitality services in South Africa has increased dramatically; to such an extent that it has been introduced into schools as a full-blown subject.
  • The majority of existing hospitality teachers have no specialized training due to a serious lack of training facilities. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Recognition of Prior Learning:
  • Appropriate prior learning will be recognised.
  • Access may be gained to the qualification through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
  • Exemption from specific modules may be granted on account of proven appropriate prior learning.

    Entry Requirements:
  • National Senior Certificate, Level 4, with Mathematics and Accountancy or Business Economics or Economics, granting access to Bachelor's Degree study.
  • Senior Certificate, Level 4 with Matriculation exemption with at least 40% for Mathematics and Accountancy or Business Economics or Economics.
  • National Certificate (Vocational), Level 4 with Mathematics, granting access to Bachelor's Degree study.
