PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
1. Postgraduate level knowledge of the field of Phytosanitation and plant quarantine regulations.
2. Skills to understand plant disease development, importance of phytosanitation regulations and implementing plant quarantine regulations.
3. To study the complexity of plant diseases, economic impact of insect pests and to determine risk assessment of new disease or pest outbreaks to positively contribute to ensuring the national food supply of the country.
4. Opportunities for continued personal intellectual growth, gainful economic activity and rewarding contributions to society.
5. To improve the livelihood of South Africans by preventing introduction of new disease or pest outbreaks.

    1. Understand and have a deeper knowledge of the complexity of plant diseases, the interaction of micro-organisms with the plant, disease expression and basic concepts of insect or plant disease control.

    3. Collect, analyse, interpret, select and critically evaluate general plant pathological, entomological, nematological and weed science literature and utilise this knowledge in a problem solving way.

    2. Recognise his/her responsibility towards preventing new disease outbreaks in the wider socio-economic context.
