PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:
This qualification aims to broaden and deepen student's critical understanding of our world, more specifically socio-economic and political changes in society over time. In this process it aims to facilitate reflective thinking. The specific purpose of this qualification is to equip students with the knowledge and competencies to understand and apply advanced methods and techniques in the field of History.

This qualification serves to consolidate and deepen the student's expertise in South African, African and World history, and to develop research capacity in the methodology and techniques of history as a discipline.

Rationale:
The qualification is aimed at students who want to pursue careers which require History as a core competency. The qualification equips candidates who intend pursuing higher research degrees with deeper level knowledge and skills which are essential for future research. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
Applicants who do not meet the admission requirements, but who can demonstrate experiential or work-based learning at an equivalent level maybe considered for RPL provided a proper assessment of the prior learning has been conducted. Such candidates may be required to broaden their knowledge base by enrolling for identified preliminary modules prior to admission or parallel modules after admission. Candidates may also apply for exemption from certain modules on the grounds of credits obtained from relevant qualifications of study concerned. The process will be implemented in strict adherence to the relevant Nelson Mandela University (NMU) and South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) RPL policies and approval by relevant faculty structures.

    This qualification comprises of compulsory and electives module at Level 8 totalling 120 Credits.

  • Research Project, 30 Credits.
  • Historiography/Philosophy of History, 25 Credits.
  • Research Methodology, 25 Credits.

    Elective Modules:
  • Themes from 20th Century South Africa History, 25 Credits.
  • Themes from History of Africa, 25 Credits.
  • Themes from 20th Century World History, 25 Credits. 

  • EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES 
    1. Demonstrate the ability to critically evaluate important trends/developments in the historiography and philosophy of History.
    2. Demonstrate the ability to apply correct methodologies and techniques to critically analyse African History and the position of Africa in the World, which form the core focus of the qualification.
    3. Demonstrate independent primary Historical research skills in accordance qualification. Research skills of candidates need to clearly reflect a successful balance between applying theoretical underpinnings (theory and methodology modules) of the qualification and practical training research project. 

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    Integrated Assessment:
    The qualification is designed to include both formative and summative assessments for the theory and elective modules. Formative Assessments are provided by means of tutorials and assignments. Tests form both formative and summative assessments for theory and elective modules. Test marks are included as part of the class mark.

    Summative Assessment of theory and elective modules concludes with formal written examinations which are assessed internally by the course lecturers.

    Final Assessment for theory and elective modules is based on a 50:50 ratio of the module mark to the examination mark. 

    INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY 
    The qualification is comparable to similar programmes offered by well-known institutions abroad.
