Registered-data under construction

The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:
The purpose of the training is to equip the candidate with the necessary skills and knowledge to manage all aspects of Clinical Paediatric Oncology. The curriculum, including the general principles of Paediatric Oncology, a comprehensive approach to specific tumour types and key aspects of supportive care, is available on the website of the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa.

In addition to treating childhood malignancy the graduate would be expected to be able to:
  • Research complex cases and coordinate multidisciplinary management.
  • Audit results and manage treatment protocols.
  • Plan and manage oncology services.
  • Educate nursing and medical staff.
  • Master basic analytical research methodology, and perform and present research including a relevant literature review.

    Rationale:
    The training programme aims to allow certification (according to the requirements of the Health Professions Council of South Africa) as a registered subspecialist in Paediatric Oncology.

    Entry Requirements:
    A candidate shall not be admitted to the programme, unless he/she (a) submits proof that he/she, prior to commencing with education and training in the relevant subspecialty, has complied with all the requirements for registration as a specialist in the primary or one of the primary specialities listed against the relevant subspecialty; (b) has been registered as a specialist in that field; and (c) has been appointed against an Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA)-approved training number.

    4. Intrathecal administration of chemotherapy.
    5. Develop a highly effective communication skill set and a thorough understanding of ethics as it applies to paediatric oncology.
    6. Developed an understanding of the theory and practice of evidence based medicine.
    7. Passed the sub-specialist exam in paediatric oncology administered by the College of Paediatrics of South Africa.
    8. Submitted and passed a mini-dissertation according to the University of Cape Town (UCT) guidelines. 

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    Integrated Assessment:
    The examination consists of two parts. The examination in Part I consists of one or more written paper(s) and/or such practical and/or oral examinations as the examiners may require. The examination in Part 2 (for those candidates who wish to obtain the Degree) consists of a dissertation.
