The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:
The purpose of this qualification is to produce specialist emergency physicians with the appropriate clinical knowledge, procedural skills and management skills to function at specialist level. It also aims to provide qualifiers with the necessary knowledge, specific skills and applied competence such that they will meet the requirements for specialisation in Emergency Medicine of the College of Emergency Medicine of South Africa. This includes a minimum period of supervised experiential learning and success in the College of Emergency Medicine examination for the FCEM (Fellowship of College of Emergency Medicine). Finally, it aims to produce graduates who are competent in Emergency Care Research.

Rationale:
This qualification trains medical doctors to become specialists in Emergency Medicine. It forms part of the credentialing process for registration as specialists in emergency medicine registered as such by the Health Professions Council of South Africa. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
The minimum requirement is:
  • A Medical Clinical Sciences Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB).
    Or
  • Similar qualification acceptable to the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).
    Or
  • A completed the prescribed intern period and community service (or and HPCSA-approved similar) and is requirements currently registered with the HPCSA as a medical practitioner.

    This qualification comprises of compulsory modules at Level 9 totalling 180 Credits.

    Compulsory Modules, Level 9, 180 Credits:
  • Master of Medicine (MMed) in Emergency Medicine Part 2, 60 Credits.
  • MMed in Emergency Medicine Part 1, 60 Credits.
  • MMed in Emergency Medicine Part 3, 60 Credits.

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome:
  • Demonstrate ability to assess and manage emergency medical cases.
  • Demonstrate specialist level knowledge and skills required to manage emergency cases.
  • Demonstrate the ability to lead teams and manage clinical environments.
  • Demonstrate the ability to manage specialised medical scenarios such as Major incidents, prehospital and wilderness medicine, the ability to design, execute and report on research.

    Integrated Assessment:
    Candidates write the College of Medicine Examinations Parts 1 and 2, for which they receive credit towards the Master of Medicine (MMed). They then produce a dissertation before qualifying with the MMed. All examinations are externally examined.
