PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:
The primary purpose of this qualification is to provide qualifying learners with intellectual competencies and practical skills in the acquisition, interpretation and understanding of transport management principles. Also, the qualification aims to develop learner with a wide range of vocational and industry-specific intellectual competencies, knowledge and practical skills. This will enable learners to critically explain and apply multi-modal transportation management principles, processes and procedures.

Rationale:
The qualification will provide the learner with a range of fundamental knowledge and competencies in fields such as business communication, information systems, industrial relations and project management. Furthermore, it will provide the learner with detailed knowledge about general management principles and specific multi-modal transport management principles. The programme is relevant and responsive to the needs of the South African transport management industry. The learner should be able to take decisions in the context of a transport organisation, or the transport function of an organisation, to assess and adapt to circumstances impacting the organisation, and to explain the reasons behind such adaptations. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Recognition of Prior Learning(RPL):
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is done in accordance with following the Institution RPL Policy. In cases of students learners not complying with the formal entry requirements, RPL will be determined in accordance with following the policy and guideline of the University institution concerning the recognition of other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning and experience. Recognition takes place only where prior learning corresponds to the required National Qualifications Framework(NQF) level, and in terms of applied competencies relevant to the content and outcomes of the qualification. Through Recognition of Prior Learning, learners may gain access on condition that they continue their studies at institution.

    1. Comprehend essential requirements for contractual and delictual liability and to obtain an in-depth and practical overview of the various business entities and the role of the paralegal in disputes relevant to these entities.
    2. Obtain a theoretical and practical overview of the common law and legislation which defines the criminal law, criminal procedure law and law of evidence as well as a broad perspective of the legislation as it pertains to the functioning of both business entities and natural persons.
    3. Be competent in analysing and applying the legislation which regulates family law in the event of a dispute or where the rights of a person are enforced.
    4. Demonstrate an understanding of road freight transport management concepts and principles.
    5. Explain the importance and role of the road freight transport industry and the functioning thereof on a macro- and a micro-level.

  • Demonstrate an ability to identify and solve problems critical and creative thinking about more advanced transport management concepts and principles. The learner must evaluate and, where relevant, correctly apply theoretical concepts and approaches to transport management strategies and policies and reflect on the application made.
  • Display team ship and demonstrate an acceptable level of social sensitivity in relationships with others and work effectively in a team by implementing the relevant theory and reflecting on the implementation made. Display a knowledge and understanding of the various role players involved in, or affected by, the transport sector, with specialised reference to freight transport.
  • Display an ability to act responsibly in interactions with other role-players in the transport field. Display also an ability to accept responsibility for any required in evaluation and application of the various transport management concepts and principles.
  • Demonstrate the ability to execute research in the field of transport, including the correct gathering, analysing, integrating and interpretation of information on transport management issues, by utilising the relevant theoretical research principles and reflecting on the research undertaken.
  • Communicate effectively in an oral and/or written manner, with different role players, particularly in the transport management field, by applying the theoretical principles of communication and reflecting on the application made.
  • Operate the necessary management technology, in particular communication devices such as specified computer hardware and software and the internet, fax machines, etc.
  • Explain the importance and role of the transport (with specialised reference to freight transport) and the regulation thereof, internationally, regionally, nationally, provincially and locally. Discern between the roles of transport at these various macro- and micro-levels.
  • Demonstrate the ability to identify the different skills and capabilities necessary in the execution of the activities and responsibilities of a transport manager, and to consider different learning options to acquire these skills and capabilities.
  • Explain the link between the number of transport professionals and level of professionalism in the transport sector, and the effectiveness and efficiency of the transport sector and therefore of the economy.
  • Explain the role which a more effective and efficient transport sector will have in the economy and the impact which this will ,in turn have on the living standards of the country (e.g. the redress of poverty, improved mobility).
  • Demonstrate a positive approach towards various communities and a sensitivity for the social, economic and cultural differences within these communities. Analyse the particular transport needs of different communities, taking into consideration their various social, economic and cultural differences and therefore their differing needs and requirements concerning the transport sector.
  • Identify areas of employment-seeking and career-pathing, and demonstrate acceptable employment-seeking skills for entry into the transport sector by applying theoretical principles of employment-seeking and career-pathing and reflecting on the necessary skills.
  • Display an ability to effectively and responsibly organise and coordinate resources and opportunities, particularly in the field of transport, by applying relevant theoretical aspects and reflecting on the application made. Demonstrate an acceptable level of responsibility and organisational ability concerning his or her activities. Finally, demonstrate a knowledge of the financial implications of organising and coordinating activities undertaken.

    Integrated Assessment:
    Integrated assessment, focusing on the achievement of the Exit Level Outcomes, will be done by completion of two individual assignments and one written examinations and also a qualification project in the 3rd year. For all the assessment purposes, self-assessment questions at the end of each learning unit offer learners the opportunity to assess whether they understand the unit entirely before attempting the next learning unit. 

  • INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY 
    The Swinburne University of Technology in Australia offers a Diploma of Logistics which is a general qualification for the integrated management of logistics operations. This qualification prepares learners to responsibly manage varied functions in the wide broad area of logistics including freight, supply chains, transport, inventory, procurement, warehousing and other areas. The purpose and outcomes of the qualification compare favourably with the institution's qualification. The qualification duration is one year full-time and differs from the institution's qualification which is three years full-time. Swinburne University of Technology in Australia offers a Bachelor of Business with Major in Logistics and Supply Chain Management. The duration of the qualification is three years full-time which is the same as the institution's qualification. The Bachelor of Business is designed to equip learners with core skills and knowledge in business, management and operations to prepare them for roles in modern organisations. The qualification design includes transport management which compares favourably with the institution's qualification.
