PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:
The primary purpose of this qualification is to provide qualifying learners with intellectual competencies and practical skills in the acquisition, analysis, interpretation and application of underlying theories, models and approaches in entrepreneurship. Learners should be able to reflect on the economic realities in the Small, Medium and Macro Enterprises (SMME'S) as well as in bigger organisations, and obtain applied competence in entrepreneurship.
The qualification will develop the learner in preparation for a career as an entrepreneurial person or as an employee in Small, Medium and Macro Enterprises (SMME'S), and provide scientific-based knowledge to prepare learners for further study programs.

Rationale:
This qualification has been designed to provide qualifying learners with intellectual competencies and practical skills in the acquisition, analysis, interpretation and application of underlying theories, models and approaches to entrepreneurial management and creative thinking and doing in the management profession. The qualification will develop the learner in preparation for a career as an entrepreneurial person or as an employee in Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMME'S), and provide scientific-based knowledge. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Recognition of Prior Learning(RPL):
Recognition of Prior Learning(RPL) in the case of learners not complying with the formal entry requirements will be conducted in accordance with the policy and guidelines of the University concerning the recognition of other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning and experience. Recognition takes place only where prior learning corresponds to the required National Qualifications Framework (NQF) -Level, and in terms of applied competencies relevant to the content and outcomes of the qualification. Through recognition of prior learning learners may gain access, or advanced placement, or recognition of status, on condition that they continue their studies at this University.

    Integrated Assessment:
    The qualification is coherently aligned in that all teaching, learning and assessment activities are linked to module and qualification outcomes. Assessment methods are varied and includes summative and formative assessment to enhance applied competence from learners and facilitate authentic assessment and learning. Assessment will not only be used to determine whether outcomes were achieved, but also to generate data for grading and provide feedback in order to improve the curriculum. Learners are continuously assessed via practical group, class assignments, case study discussions, essays, presentations, informal class tests, and formal modular tests in a written mode. They also do independent research that leads to scientific assignments. In addition, learners will assess themselves as well as the work of each other and reflect on the dynamics of this process. 

  • INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY 
    The University of Alberta in Canada offers a Bachelor of Commerce (major in Entrepreneurship) which is similar to the qualification offered by the University of Johannesburg in terms of the qualification purpose, outcomes, and fields of specialisation. The qualification differs in terms of duration, entry requirements, duration of study and credit weighting.

    The University of Auckland in New Zealand offers a Bachelor of Commerce (major in Innovation and Entrepreneurship) which is similar to the qualification offered by the University of Johannesburg in terms of the qualification purpose, duration of study and credit weighting but differs in relation to the entry requirements.
