PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:
The purpose of this qualification is to provide qualifying learners with applied competence, on a postgraduate level, in the mastering, analysis, interpretation and understanding economic principles and methods, with a special focus on Econometric techniques.

Rationale:
This qualification will prepare learners to reflect on their own economic applications to assess the effect thereof in the holistic context of Economics as a social science within their everyday lives and lastly, it will prepare them for further study in Economics and Econometrics as a science. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Recognition of Prior Learning(RPL):
Recognition of Prior Learning(RPL) in the case of learners not complying with the formal entry requirements will be conducted in accordance with the policy and guidelines of the University concerning the recognition of other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning and experience. Recognition takes place only where prior learning corresponds to the required National Qualifications Framework(NQF) Level, and in terms of applied competencies relevant to the content and outcomes of the qualification. Through Recognition of Prior Learning(RPL) learners may gain access, or advanced placement, or recognition of status, on condition that they continue their studies at this University.

Entry Requirements:
The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is the:
  • Bachelor's Degree registered at National Qualifications Framework(NQF) Level 7 and a major in Economics as well as appropriate background in Econometrics and/or Statistics (NQF Level 5).

These needs include analytical, mathematical and practical skills to analyse the economy and the econometrician/analyst/researcher needs to be able to give advice to role players to implement decisions.
    2. Utilise the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge acquired to be able to perform their duties as a specialist on econometrics in the workplace and/or in the academy as this qualification is both a professional and academically focused learning qualification.

    The Associated Assessment Criterion highlighted below will be integrated within the Exit Level:
  • Demonstrate the ability to identify and solve problems in the field of economic, business and financial management correctly by applying the theoretical principles correctly and reflect on the application made.
  • Plan and undertake research in the field of economic, business and financial management, including the gathering, analysing, synthesising and interpretation of information on economic, business and financial management issues correctly utilising the relevant theoretical research principles and reflect on the research undertaken.
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing with different role players in the field of economic, business and financial management by applying the theoretical principles of communication and reflect on the application made correctly.
  • Develop an accountable and effective theoretical and practical macro-vision of economic, business and financial management internationally, nationally, provincially, regionally and locally.
  • Organise and coordinate resources and opportunities in the field of economic, business and financial management effectively and responsibly by applying the relevant theoretical aspects and reflect on the application thereof.

    Integrated Assessment:
    The qualification is coherently aligned in that all teaching, learning and assessment activities are linked to module and qualification outcomes. Assessment methods are varied and includes summative and formative assessment to enhance applied competence from learners and facilitate authentic assessment and learning. Assessment will not only be used to determine whether outcomes were achieved, but also to generate data for grading and provide feedback in order to improve the curriculum. In order for all the assessment purposes to be achieved, Summative Assessment Approach (semester tests, examinations and the research project) forms part of assessment methods.

    The University of Otago in New Zealand offers a Bachelor of Commerce Honours (major in Econometrics) which is similar to the qualification offered by the University of Johannesburg in terms of the qualification purpose and outcomes, and duration. The qualification differs in terms of entry requirements and credit weighting.

    The University of Auckland in New Zealand offers a Bachelor of Commerce Honours (major in Econometrics) which is similar to the qualification offered by the University of Johannesburg in terms of the qualification purpose, duration of study, entry requirements and credit weighting.
