PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:
The purpose of this Advanced Diploma in Management is twofold, namely to prepare learners for Postgraduate study and to become a fully competent organisational leaders and managers within and across the core functions of an organisation. This is done through the development of an ethical consciousness and a deepening of their knowledge and understanding of theories, methodologies and practices in the selected management related functional areas.

The scope of knowledge in this qualification is integrated knowledge of the selected functional areas of management. The competencies developed includes not only an understanding of knowledge in the selected functional areas, but also an ability to identify, analyse and critically reflect on and address complex familiar and unfamiliar problems in the identified functional areas, applying evidenced based solutions and theory-driven arguments.

Rationale:
This vocational Advanced Diploma in Management provides graduates with knowledge and experience of management and in this way, improves their human capital and employability. It builds on the fundamental principles, concepts and methods of the disciplinary knowledge and skills gained in the Diploma in Management and other related Diplomas. It allows graduates an opportunity to broaden the scope of their knowledge and gain an in-depth understanding of the areas of specialisation which will prepare them adequately to enter Postgraduate studies in this and other related fields. It provides learners with insights to the world of work through work-integrated learning modalities thus giving them exposure to the demands of a changing work environment.

The importance of effective corporate governance, transparency and ethics in management underpin the implementation of this qualification. In addition, businesses continue to engage globally and operate in a competitive environment, stressing the need to work more collaboratively and being more process-centric. These imperatives require the institution through this qualification to respond by developing qualifications in Management that will allow learners to work effectively and collaboratively across a range of business sectors as well as the ability to integrate business functions and often disparate information technologies to meet the needs of customers in a coherent manner.

After consultation with alumni, employers of current learners and information retrieved from job advertisements, the following aspects will be addressed in the Higher Education Qualifications Sub-Framework (HEQSF) aligned Advanced Diploma in Management:
  • Strategic management; global strategic management; change management; leadership; organisational behaviour; corporate governance and compliance.
  • Current trends and theories in financial markets; cash flow management; debtors and creditors.
  • Operations management with reference to business systems.
  • Qualitative and quantitative corporate research as well as preparation of learners for entry into postgraduate studies.
  • Investment analysis.
  • Leadership.

    The areas of activity in which the qualifying learners will operate are: Junior Managers; Team Leaders; Financial Administrators; Business Analysts; Investment Administrators.

    The extent to which employers and employees benefit from the knowledge economy will be determined by their capacity to conduct innovative research and apply new knowledge in the workplace. This requires the development of research capacity in this Advanced Diploma in Management, particularly research capacity related to the management sector and national industrial plans. The Advanced Diploma in Management will also be developing increased capacity to meet the demands of a high level of theoretical engagement and intellectual independence as required by the HEQSF (2013) to allow learners to progress to Postgraduate level. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
    RPL is a process of identifying the knowledge and skills of an applicant against the admission requirements of a qualification and/or for credits against a part thereof. The process involves the identification, mediation, assessment and acknowledgement of knowledge and skills obtained through informal, non-formal and/or formal learning. The RPL process is multi-dimensional and multi-contextual in nature, aimed at the individual needs of applicants and is handled in accordance with an institutional RPL policy by a unit dedicated to this activity. The RPL process includes guidance and counselling, as well as the preparation of a body of evidence to be presented by the RPL candidate to meet institutional requirements. An appeal procedure is also in place to accommodate queries. RPL in this qualification will relate to gaining access to the qualification and/or credits/advanced standing as described in institutional guidelines.

    Therefore in accordance with national RPL requirements and the institutional RPL policy and practices candidates who submit a body of evidence of non-formal and formal learning will be considered for admission to this qualification. RPL applications will be dealt with on an individual basis.

  • Show how products and services are defined and developed by operations management.
  • Solve inventory problems with known and unknown variable/s and develop inventory management probabilistic and non- probabilistic (deterministic) models.
  • Eliminate waste by applying lean management techniques to build a lean organisation.
  • Use supply chain management techniques to explain the strategic importance of the supply chain.
  • Plan and manage suppliers by using known supplier sourcing strategies effectively.
  • Treat constraints in a business through the application of the theory of constraints.
  • Optimise productivity by using the tools for process analysis.

  • Display an open, moral, humane and broadly informed mentality, so as to see business's ethical challenges as occasions to live through with integrity and courage.
  • Establish methods and structures within the organisation for implementing corporate ethical policy, including provision for building an ethical culture and employee awareness, vigilance and competence in the prevention, detection and resolution of unethical issues.

    Integrated Assessment:
    Integrated assessment takes the form of an appropriate variety of both summative and formative assessment methods for example: written and oral examinations, problem solving assignments, projects, presentations, case studies and the successful completion of a research project. Integrated assessment in this qualification aims to achieve the following:
  • Assess the extent to which students have integrated the management professional roles, knowledge, practice and skills delivered through the learning outcomes of the subjects of this qualification.
  • Assess the learner's ability to apply Management and Financial Management principles to various industries.
  • Provide opportunities to develop reflexive competence through reflection-in-action and reflection-on-action.

    Formative assessment aims at enhancing the learner's learning and provides learners with an opportunity to reflect critically on their own learning and to improve their own levels of personal accountability and time management. Formative assessment usually consists of a variety of assessment tasks relevant to the field of study. In this qualification, it will consist of a variety of tasks such assignments, presentations, case studies.

    Summative assessment takes place at the end of a section of work/quarter or semester and is aimed at assessing learners' attainment against the learning outcomes of the qualification and subject(s). Summative assessments are internally and externally moderated based on institutional policy and requirements. Summative assessments usually consist of a variety of formal assessment tasks relevant to the field of study, including written tests, reports and examination. In this qualification, it will consist of written tests, assignments and project based learning conducted during and at the end of the academic semester/year.

    All summative assessments are moderated using a three-step process, namely pre-assessment, post-assessment and an integrated review according to institutional rules and assessment procedures. This is done to ensure that each assessment is valid, reliable, fair, accurate and well-designed. Assessments have appropriate criteria and rubrics to guide both the learners and the examiner.

    External Moderation is done by suitably qualified and senate approved appointed moderators. The external moderator receives all of the internally moderated information as indicated on the Integrated Review form. 

  • INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY 
    The international comparability exercise in the development of curricula for new management qualifications the following trends need to be taken into account: globalisation, and increased international economic activity. These global trends helped to inform our qualification to develop globally competitive learners.

    The comparability exercise was conducted at a programme level and compared with similar qualifications abroad. The following institutions were chosen: United States of America: Kings International University of Science & Technology; United Kingdom: Newton International College; New Zealand: NTEC tertiary group; Canada: Thompson Rivers University; Australia: Federation University Australia; Perth College of Business & Technology; Australian Pacific College; The Malka Group; Australian Institute of Management; Canberra Institute of Technology; Queensland international Institute and Australian Institute of Flexible Learning. The following findings emerged from this comparability exercise and were incorporated into the Advanced Diploma:
  • The duration of the qualification was typically 1-2 years.
  • The Advanced Diplomas provide learners with advanced business knowledge, skills and competence required for business operations and is intended for persons who have a fundamental understanding of business concepts.
  • The core components of the qualification focus on Management and key functional areas of Management while elective components allow learners to customise their qualifications.
  • Some Advanced Diplomas move from the premise that identifying, developing and sustaining leadership in an organisation must be an organisational strategic objective.
  • Vital skills to successful management include: managing finance, managing innovation, capitalising on strategic opportunities, organisational change, pursuing customer service, quality, productivity and profitability, how to develop and implement a business and marketing plan in line with strategic planning for continuous organisational improvement, managing knowledge and information.
