PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The primary purpose of the qualification is to provide Honours Bachelor of Arts (BA) graduates with systematic knowledge, specialised skills and theoretical competence focusing on or within a particular discipline or within an interdisciplinary framework to prepare them for specialist training at an advanced level.

A second purpose of the qualification is to provide South Africa (and other countries) with graduates who have in-depth knowledge and the confidence to identify and define complex problems and to apply their skills in finding solutions to those problems, especially within unfamiliar contexts.

A third purpose of the qualification is to provide South Africa (and other countries) with people who can demonstrate thorough familiarity with a particular discipline or interdisciplinary framework and have the ability to perform independently as intellectual leaders in their society.

Formal Prior Learning:
  • Learners need a Bachelor of Arts (BA) Degree to register for the Honours (Hons) BA.
  • Learners' prior accredited learning at tertiary level in relevant domains which constitute credit-bearing units is recognised.

    Non-Formal and Informal Prior Experiential Learning:
  • Learners will be given RPL for individual modules if they can produce a portfolio of evidence or undergo any other recognised means of assessment that shows that they meet the outcomes and associated assessment criteria specified for that module. They may also be awarded blocks of credits towards elective modules. A policy is currently being drawn up.

    Entry Requirements:
    A Bachelor's Degree with Arabic as a major.

    This qualification consists of compulsory at Level 7 and Level 8, totalling to 132 Credits.

  • Research methodology in Religion, 24 Credits.

    Level 8:
  • Research Report, 36 Credits.
  • Arabic Grammar and Philology, 24 Credits.
  • Qur'anic Translation and Commentary, 24 Credits.
  • Further Specialist Arabic Literary Texts, 24 Credits.

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
  • Ability to explain the most important concepts relating to Arabic grammar, philology, stylistics and semantics and engage theoretically in metatheory disconcerts of Arabic grammar, philology, stylistics and semantics.
  • Ability to display a firm understanding of the text, insights into the understanding of commentaries, and the ability to read Arabic commentaries which developed over the past fourteen centuries Level 8.
  • Ability to show evidence of a strong understanding of select Arabic classical, modern and contemporary professional texts; insights into the linguistic development of select Arabic texts, from the seventh to the nineteenth centuries in prose, poetry and rhythmic prose; and the select contemporary texts, allow students to master discourse in fields like classical Islam, diplomacy, politics, law, trade, industry, technology, sport, fashion and economics Assignments and written examination.
  • Ability to plan and execute a research strategy appropriate to the discipline.
  • Ability to produce an article-sized work of original research within the boundaries of the discipline.

    Integrated Assessment:
    Assessment is done in line with the Institution Assessment Policy and the Assessment Procedures Manual.

    Formative assessment is done by means of activities in study guides, self-assessment questions in study guides and self-assessment assignments as well as written assignments that have to be submitted for assessment. The assignments are either in the form of multiple-choice questions (MCQs), short questions, essays or a combination. Learners must submit at least two assignments for each module. The marks obtained for these assignments contribute a minimum of 20% towards the final mark for the module. The remaining mark is made up of the examination mark.

    Feedback on activities and self-assessment questions are provided in study guides and tutorial letters. Individual feedback on assignments is provided by assessors in marked assignments while general feedback on these assignments is provided in tutorial letters.

    Summative assessment is conducted by means of a two-to three-hour examination per module.

    Feedback on summative assessment (examinations) is provided to individual learners upon request. 

  • INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY 
    Institutions forms part of an internationally recognised accreditation system whereby university qualifications are evaluated against international comparators and accredited accordingly; for example, Institution's qualifications are accredited in the International Handbook of Universities and in the Commonwealth Universities' Yearbook. 

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    The qualification will articulate with those of other tertiary institutions and with other qualifications. For example, recognition will be given to modules completed at other tertiary institutions and the relationship will be reciprocal.

    Upon completion of the Honours Bachelor of Arts (BA) Learners have a number of options for further study. For example, Learners may proceed to Postgraduate study at Master of Arts (M.A) level.
