PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner is capable of:

Learners who are assessed as competent against this unit standard will be able to understand and apply basic setting out of works in the construction industry using basic survey equipment such as measuring tapes, ranging rods and levels.It contributes to socio-economic transformation in that learners will be able to undergo RPL assessment and receive recognition for previous learning and experience. The employability and career prospects of learners can therefore be enhanced by this unit standard.

  • Setting out principles include the setting out of squares, elevations, slopes, distances, vertical and horizontal surfaces
  • Reference and survey control systems include setting out points (SOP), benchmarks, grids, centre and staked lines as well as all survey control work
  • Levelling and the transfer of levels include vertical measurement (heights, elevations and levels), the use of an automatic level and levelling staff, reading, booking and reducing of levels
  • Reducing of levels includes both Collimation and Rise and Fall methods
