PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Explain the need for water treatment and the methods and equipment used.

It is assumed that people starting to learn towards this unit standard are already able to communicate effectively with others.
Operate water treatment system used in air-conditioning and refrigeration installations.
Explain the operation of the vapour compression refrigeration cycle.
List commonly applied air-conditioning systems, state their application and explain their operation. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
Water treatment methods, which have been in use and have scientific/physical evidence (not anecdotal) of their effectiveness over specific time periods or more than one air-conditioning or refrigeration system

The methods employed shall include an overview of the equipment and consumables needed for hot water, condenser water and chilled water circuits.

Describe what methods are available to counteract the adverse effects that untreated water has on the various water circuits, and the advantages and disadvantages of each method. 

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
1. The advantages of using one method over another, in each water circuit, are explained using criteria including cost, effectiveness, convenience, safety and environmental impact, and is provable using evidence gathered during use. 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
2. The permanent devices and consumables necessary for each method are described as to their role in the effectiveness of the method, as well as to their effect on people and the environment. 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
3. The consequences to each water circuit of a break in the treatment routine are explained for each method in terms of the speed of deterioration of the condition of the water and the period of time required to restore it to an acceptable condition.

Any person wishing to be assessed against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, who may appoint a moderator to be present at the assessment.

The assessor must have knowledge and experience of air-conditioning or refrigeration.
