PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner must make the selling of travel insurance an integral part of the booking transaction, in order to protect the agency and its customers as well as optimise sales. He/she must be aware of the legal requirements with regard to travel insurance.

1. Explain the concept of travel insurance and its importance to the agency and to the customer.

2. Describe the different types of travel insurance and what each area of insurance covers. (Range of travel insurance: personal accident, medical, cancellation and curtailment, default, baggage)

3. Explain the difference between credit card insurance and typical travel insurance in terms of cost, insurance coverage and excesses.

4. Explain the conditions surrounding additional cover and 'top-up' insurance. (Range of conditions surrounding 'top-up' insurance: automatic insurance, credit card number on ticket, parties to the agreement).

5. Describe IATA insurance covered by conditions of travel on the air ticket.

6. Describe the legal implications of not insuring a customer.

7. State the rules and restrictions of insurance principals.

8. Describe the need for special insurance in cases of terminal illness, and where the customer is partaking in high-risk activities and explain how to access this information and process the policy.

    9. Sell a policy that is best suited to the customer's needs. (either using the principal's brochure or telephonically).

    10. Sell adequate cover to the customer, not unnecessary expensive insurance that would boost personal commissions.

    11. Given a particular tour operator package, establish the type and cover of any automatic insurance and determine the need for additional cover.

    12. Choose only the best policy for the customer and give reasons why it is the best.

    13. Do not use insurance terminology and jargon when dealing with a customer.

    14. Select the correct cover period and calculate the costs. (Range of costs: total cost, premiums, medical excess cover, VAT, commission due to the agency).

    15. Point out any kind of insurance excess or 'small print' that affects the customer.

    16. Claim against insurance and explain the process to the customer.

    17. Issue travel insurance policies, file and report to the principal according to the required format.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    1. Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.

    2. Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be registered with the FE/HE Registrar.

    3. Any institution wishing to receive skill development grants must be accredited with the relevant ETQA. Such an institution will also be registered with the relevant SETA.

    4. Moderation of asessment will be done by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.

    Embedded knowledge and Critical cross-field outcomes have been included within the specific outcomes category. This has been done as it was deemed necessary to ensure holistic assessment occurred.

    The specific outcomes can be applied in a range of contexts.

    Many of the outcomes have been written in such a way that competence must be demonstrated in the context as opposed to in isolation from a context. The specific outcomes are comparable to outcomes used internationally.

    We therefore structured outcomes using the format noun + verb + condition (modifying phrase)Specific outcomes have been split into three categoriesa) knowledge and understanding (what the learner must know and understand)b) decision-making and acting (what the learner must do)c) adapting performance ( including reflexive competence)In many instances there are more than six specific outcomes, as the inclusion of critical cross-field outcomes and embedded knowledge has increased the number of specific outcomes.
