PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will enable learners to explain the anatomy of the skin and hair and correctly identify and refer clients with skin and hair disorders for appropriate treatment.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Describe the structure and functions of the skin and hair.
  • Describe the symptoms of skin and hair disorders.
  • Explain the causes of skin and hair disorders and their appropriate resolution. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that a learner will be competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 2.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Skin/nail disorders may be contagious or non contagious. Contagious conditions may include:
  • Bacterial, viral, or fungal infections.

    Skin disorders include but are not limited to:
  • Skin lesions.
  • Disorders of the sebaceous glands.
  • Disorders of the sudoriferous glands.
  • Inflammations of the skin.
  • Pigmentations of the skin.
  • Hypertrophies of the skin.
  • Dandruff.
  • Fungal infections.
  • Animal parasitic infections.
  • Bacterial infections.

    Hair disorders include but are not limited to:
  • Canities.
  • Hypertrichosis.
  • Trichoptilosis.

    The functions of the skin and hair are explained in terms of their purpose in the functioning of a healthy body. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Describe the symptoms of skin and hair disorders. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Symptoms of skin disorders include but are not limited to: cuts, abrasions, scarring, blisters, rashes, staining and inflammation.
  • Symptoms of hair disorders include but are not limited to: alopecia, lice, brittle hair, hirsuitism and hypertrichosis.

    Common skin disorders that occur on the head are described in accordance with their appearance and common characteristics.

    Common hair disorders are described in accordance with their appearance and common characteristics.

    Technical terms for skin and hair disorders are defined and used in recognising the disorder. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Explain the causes of skin and hair disorders and their appropriate resolution. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    The causes of skin and hair disorders include but are not limited to:

  • Chemical trauma.

    The causes of hair disorders are defined in accordance with hairdressing requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The causes of skin disorders are defined in accordance with hair and beauty requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The possibilities of contagion from skin and hair disorders are explained according to industry standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Appropriate responses to skin and hair disorders are identified to comply with industry standards. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Refer clients for appropriate treatment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Disorders requiring medical or specialist treatment are identified according to general hairdressing practices. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Suitable practitioners are identified from a list of available practitioners in the area. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The client is informed of the disorder and referred for treatment in a caring and non offensive manner.

  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA in accordance with the current ETQA regulations.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Other ETQAs who have a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA would be responsible for moderation of learner achievements of learners who meet the requirements of this qualification.
