PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard will understand and perform a specific dance form at a level acceptable in the performance of the particular genre. Qualifying learners will be able to plan and construct a dance sequence for both themselves and others while staying true to the authenticity of the dance and music.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Preparing for execution of dance.
  • Demonstrating and explaining movements for dance form.
  • Applying dance techniques.
  • Explaining and performing dance timing to given music/rhythm.
  • Constructing a sequenced dance. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • Communication at NQF Level 3 or equivalent.
  • Unit Standard: Explain the history of a dance genre (Must be the dance genre being executed). 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Dance forms may include but are not limited to Ballroom, Latin American, African, Classical Ballet, Contemporary, Jazz, Tap, Spanish, Hip-Hop and Afro-fusion.
  • Dance form refers to the specific dance genre being facilitated.

    Prepare for execution of dance.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Warm-up and cool down is explained and carried out specific to the dance form. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Poise is applied to show true characteristics of the specific dance form. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Poise may include but is not limited to body-alignment, posture, and attitude.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Grooming and attire requirements are described and applied specific to the dance form. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Dance specific safe practices are explained in terms of injury prevention. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The appropriate exercise techniques are identified and applied to develop endurance, strength, flexibility, speed, balance and power. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Demonstrate and explain movements for dance form. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Movements may include but are not limited to steps, actions, figures, and variations at level of complexity being assessed.

    Movements are presented in time to music.

    Theory and vocabulary is explained and linked to the execution of the movement.

    Movements are articulated in a controlled and contained manner. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Controlled and contained may include but are not limited to balance, co-ordination, flexibility, agility, fluency, and clearly contrasted movement.

    Apply dance techniques.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The application of the dance technique is explained with clarity specific to the dance form. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    An explanation is given of the common faults in dance techniques. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Common faults may include but are not limited to physical, technical, placing, musical, and interpretation.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The consequences of not applying the dance technique correctly are explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Dance technique is demonstrated with precision specific to the dance form. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Explain and perform dance timing to given music/rhythm. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Rhythms are identified that are appropriate to the dance movements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Movements are arranged to express musical rhythms. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The mood and character of the music is explained and demonstrated in terms of the specific dance form. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The theories and value of musical time signatures are applied to the dance.

    Construct a sequenced dance.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Appropriate music is identified for the dance form and performer/dancer. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Sequencing of steps are identified and performed in relation to the space available. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Sequencing of steps may include but is not limited to direction, patterning, spatial awareness, and other dancers.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Variety of steps is used in keeping with the authenticity of the dance and music.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding in place with the relevant ETQA.
