PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners credited with this standard will have knowledge about grinding operations. Learners will perform general surface grinding operations, finishing operations and check the quality of components after grinding operations.

Learners credited with this standard will be able to:

  • Prepare grinding machine for operation.
  • Perform grinding operations on components.
  • Perform finishing requirements.
  • Perform quality tests and inspections after grinding operations. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that Learners are competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The range of general surface grinding operations includes dressing grinding wheels, and grinding of surface of magnetic chuck, to opposite sides, flat and parallel, flat face and shoulder, two vertical faces parallel and central, angular face, slots, vees using a disk wheel or cup wheel, dovetail using a formed wheel, male or female radii, thin plate and slitting or cutting, plunge cutting.

    Job instructions are interpreted to establish grinding operation requirements.

    Technical/engineering drawings are interpreted to ensure that grinding is performed with accuracy and precision.

    Machines are programmed to perform grinding operations.

    The sequence of operation is planned to ensure efficiency.

    Prepare grinding machine for operation.

    Preparation activities are determined by materials for grinding, quality and job specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The full range of pre-operational checks are performed on machine according to standard procedure and the consequences of not performing these checks are discussed. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Checks include routine maintenance on machine.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Unsafe, worn and defective machine parts are identified and reported to appropriate personnel before grinding operations are conducted. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Tools, accessories and work holding fixtures are selected according to job requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Grinding wheels are selected and mounted and the reasons for dressing and balancing them are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Machine dials are calibrated as per procedure and the importance of calibrating dials is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The different results that can be achieved with different cutting feeds and speeds are discussed.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Different machining procedures are discussed and the reasons for the selection of a specific procedure for the task at hand are discussed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Grinding operations are performed according to job schedule and specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Cutting fluids and coolants are used where appropriate. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Components are measured and checked using precision measuring equipment. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Precision measuring equipment includes verniers, micrometers, straight edges, dial gauges.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Components that do not conform to specifications are marked and reported to appropriate personnel. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The precautions that can be taken to avoid damage to work piece and machinery during operations are discussed in terms of costs and impact on job schedule.

    Problems at workstation are responded to and resolved and the implications of not doing so are discussed.

    Work is performed with due care for self, fellow workers, equipment, materials and the environment and unsafe working conditions are reported to appropriate authority.

    Waste materials are removed as per standard company procedure.

    The importance of checking quality of work against job requirements is discussed in terms of the cost to the company.

    Quality deviations are dealt with according to standard operating procedure and reported to the appropriate authorities.
