PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit standard is for the crew leader working in a supervisory role on a fire suppression assignment. Crew leaders working in such a capacity should apply their knowledge and understanding of fire behaviour to effectively direct the activities of fire fighters on site.

People credited with this standard are able to:
  • Apply understanding of fire behaviour for safe and effective fire suppression in a supervisory role.
  • Apply fire fighting methods to effect safe and effective fire suppression.
  • Monitor fire behaviour during the fire suppression process.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 4 or an equivalent.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Apply knowledge and understanding of fire behaviour for safe and effective fire suppression in a supervisory role.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Factors influencing fire behaviour are identified and explained in relation to typography, weather and fuels.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Fire danger index is described and calculations are carried out using a Fire Danger Index (FDI) calculation chart.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Conditions for probable extreme fire behaviour are interpreted based on a combination of interacting factors.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Conditions include but are not limited to rapid rate of spread, spotting, crowning, high fire intensity.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Fire suppression tactics are applied with reference to fire behaviour.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Apply fire fighting tactics to effect safe and effective fire suppression.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Appropriate methods of fire attack are directed in response to relevant fire behaviour.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Methods include but are not limited to direct attack, indirect attack and parallel attack.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Supervision of appropriate fire line construction is demonstrated in line with site conditions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The selection and use of tools and equipment is directed as required by fire behaviour and site conditions.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Monitor fire behaviour during fire suppression process.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Weather conditions are monitored constantly to adapt suppression tactics.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
FDI calculations are revised as and when required in line with changing conditions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
A diagnosis of the weather and fire situation is determined.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Appropriate remedial actions are taken to adapt tactics and strategies to changing fire behaviour.
