PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is useful for learners who intend following a career in the diamond processing sector and who are required to collect and return diamond processing equipment for repair or refurbishment.

Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Identify and label the equipment required to be repaired or refurbished.
  • Liaise with the user of the equipment to be repaired or refurbished.
  • Comply with the workplace security requirements.
  • Secure the equipment in transit.
  • Conduct post-repair-or-refurbish equipment activities. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are already competent in:

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope and context applies to the conversion of rough diamond gemstones into cut and polished diamond gemstones for sale into local and international markets.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Identify and label the equipment required to be repaired or refurbished.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The equipment and their accessories used in the process of polishing diamond gemstones that can be repaired or refurbished are identified and the broad scope of repair or refurbishment is described. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The importance of labelling equipment for repair or refurbishment is explained in relation to its owner, the user and the location in which it is used. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Housekeeping, safety practices in the workplace and care of equipment are explained in line with workplace specific requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The importance of compliance with the requirements of other workplaces in which the learner may need to work are described in terms of potential impact on health, safety, equipment, products and security. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Liaise with the user of equipment and inter-departmental customers. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The importance of maintaining good relationships with the owner and user of the equipment to be taken for repair or refurbishment is explained in terms of good working relationships, inter departmental co-operation and customer service. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The importance of not making obligations on behalf of the repairing or refurbishing operation is explained until a proper evaluation has been carried out by an expert. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The importance of ensuring record keeping relating to remove or return of equipment is explained in relation to ownership of equipment, authorisation to perform work, security arrangements and liability for loss or damage to property. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Collection and/or return of equipment is recorded in line with workplace specific requirements and users needs.

    Comply with the workplace security requirements.

    The importance of compliance with security arrangements is explained in relation to the proprietary interests of owners of businesses. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The general principles for maintaining security of diamonds in the workplace are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The importance of compliance with the requirements of other departments and/or organisation is explained in terms of good working relationships, inter departmental co-operation and customer service. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The principles of recording the transfer of equipment are described in terms of the obligation on the person in possession of the property. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The security requirements and workplace specific procedures for the collection of and delivery of equipment are complied with. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Secure the equipment in transit. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The importance of security of equipment when in transit is explained in relation to security of property, insurance liability and good customer relations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The importance of the securing of equipment in transit in relation to correct handling, identification of ownership and protection of equipment is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Equipment is transferred from the user to the repairing or refurbishing operation in accordance with workplace specific procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Conduct post-repair-or-refurbish equipment activities. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The repaired or refurbished equipment is labelled and protected for transportation to the user in accordance with workplace specific procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The equipment is delivered to the user in accordance with workplace specific procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The appropriate documentation is completed to signify the transfer of the equipment in accordance with workplace specific procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Good housekeeping is exercised after returning equipment. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Good housekeeping must include:
  • All relevant documentation is returned and/or filed for record purposes.
  • Packaging materials used are reclaimed where appropriate of disposed of into correct facilities.
  • Delivery equipment and or vehicles are returned to the appropriate holding facility.

  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
