PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard will enable learners to schedule production activities.

People credited with this unit standard will be able to draw up and apply production schedules if they are given a specific product and process design, a demand forecast, the operations capacity, the operations planning and control system, the performance management philosophy and the performance management system.

The production schedules must:
  • Be viable.
  • Be realistic and achievable.
  • Be efficient and contain an appropriate Level of flexibility.
  • Be aligned with the organisational and operational strategies.

    A learner credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Evaluate the key issues involved in scheduling production activities.
  • Apply priority and sequencing rules.
  • Use a variety of scheduling techniques and strategies for managing schedules.

    The concepts of finite and infinite scheduling are analysed to reflect their influence on the scheduling of production activities. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The difference between finite and infinite scheduling is illustrated to reflect how these concepts are applied within the operations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The implications of finite and infinite scheduling are determined as they relate to a particular operation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The concepts of backward and forward scheduling are analysed to determine their influence on scheduling production activities. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The concepts of backward and forward scheduling are evaluated to distinguish them from each other and indicate their implications on the operation. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Apply priority and sequencing rules.

    The terms priority and sequencing rules are defined as per international and national benchmarks.

    Various sequencing rules are identified and analysed to determine their impact on the scheduling process.

    The most appropriate sequencing rules are selected in accordance with the needs of a particular operations.

    Use a variety of scheduling techniques and strategies for managing schedules.

    Techniques are used to manage schedules under a variety of situations.
