PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners credited with this Unit Standard will be able to follow and apply practices in feeding and watering equines in order to prevent malnutrition or overfeeding in them.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Allocating feeding instructions to team members.
  • Monitoring and controlling feeding and watering plan.
  • Recognising and describing the conditions of malnutrition and overfeeding. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 1 or equivalent.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Team members are briefed on the feeding and the watering plan in accordance with stable procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Team members understanding of the brief is confirmed with relevant feedback. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Consequences of not adhering to the feeding and watering plan are described in terms of the impact on the animals and other team members. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Monitor and control feeding and watering plan. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Implementation of feeding and watering plan is checked at regular and frequent intervals. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Deviations from the plan are identified and reported in the required format.

    Action is taken to bring the feeding and watering in line with the plan. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Feedback is given to the team member on the quality of their implementation.

    Body condition scoring is conducted according to worksite procedures and in line with international standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Malnutrition and overfeeding are described in terms of the effects on the health of the equine. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The effects of nutrition are described in terms of the work performance of the equine. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The effects of malnutrition and overfeeding are explained in terms of equine development. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or assessing this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
