PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for people involved with preparing equines for presentation at events, competitions, sales, or shows. Learners credited with this Unit Standard are capable of identifying the requirements for preparing and affecting the turnout of equines for show.

They will also be able to follow and carry out a variety of grooming procedures on an equine, which includes but is not limited to; washing the equine; trimming the equine's tail and areas of long hair, and pulling the mane and forelock; plaiting the mane and tail; finishing the equine to enhance its general appearance according to the function or occasion required.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Identify grooming needs.
  • Banging the equine's tail, trimming areas of long hair and pulling the mane and tail.
  • Plaiting the mane and tail according to internationally accepted techniques.
  • Finishing the equine to enhance general appearance according to the function or occasion requirements.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Identify grooming requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An equine is inspected and turnout requirements are identified as per internationally accepted standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The need to restrain an equine is identified and applied according to internationally accepted humane standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The equine is cleaned and groomed according to the needs of the function or occasion. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Prepare the mane and tail and perform necessary trimming. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The mane is pulled in order to enhance the equine's appearance, according to humane internationally accepted standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The tail is pulled in order to enhance the equine's appearance, according to humane internationally accepted standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The tail is banged across the bottom according to internationally accepted standards to enhance the equine's appearance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Areas of long hair are trimmed evenly according to humane internationally accepted procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Areas of long hair includes but not limited to hairs on heels, lower jaw and briddle path.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Finish the equine to enhance the general appearance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The mane is plaited according to humane internationally accepted procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Plaits include but are not limited to standard individual rolled plaits, stallion plaits, lace plaits and dressed plaits.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Tail is plaited according to humane internationally accepted procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Hindquarters are marked in a manner that enhances the shape of the hindquarters. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Marking utensils include but are not limited to brush and water, and stencil.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Hooves are dressed with relevant products that comply with humane cosmetic use. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Face is cleaned and dressed according to internationally accepted humane standards. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Face parts include but are not limited to eyes, nostrils and muzzles.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Perform after show duties.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Plaits are removed in a soothing and humane way. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Mane and tail are brushed out in a manner that causes least discomfort to the equine. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Enhancement cosmetics are removed in a soothing and humane manner. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Cosmetics include but are not limited to gels, glitter and body paint.
     


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any individual wishing to be assessed, (including RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must hold a minimum of Level 3 qualification in the equestrian field.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard or assessing this Unit Standard, must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and ETQA guidelines.
