PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful to people who are involved in the manufacturing or assembly process and need to use the casting process.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Creating the mould cavity.
  • Doing the cast.
  • Inspecting castings.
  • Finishing off cast.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Take an impression of an ear. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Impression taking tools, materials and equipment are available for use prior to commencement. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Tools, materials and equipment may include but are not limited to Otoscope, filling instrument, Oto-stops, syringe and silicon impression material.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Impression taking technique is applied in accordance with health and safety requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Curing process is explained with examples in terms of time and type of material. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Impression is removed from the ear following procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Procedures may include but are not limited to releasing vacuum, no discomfort to client and not damaging the impression.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Impression is inspected in order to determine conformance to quality standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The consequences of impression non-conformance are explained in terms of its impact on client, quality, production and waste. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Create a negative of the impression. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Impression is prepared for making the negative according to procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The negative is moulded using the appropriate material in accordance with standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The negative is allowed to cure and removed from the impression. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Create the mould cavity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Tools, material and equipment are ensured to be ready for use prior to commencement. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Tools, material and equipment may include but are not limited to cutting knife, cutting board, marking pen, Dremel Tool (hand grinding machine), burrs, cutters, and trimmers.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The ear impression is cut, marked and shaped according to client order specifications. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Cast moulds and shells. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Casting tools, materials and equipment are available for use prior to commencement. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Casting tools, materials and equipment may include but are not limited to the impression, gel form set, perforated spool, wax pot, wax, heated wax knife, gel machine, compressor, light curing unit and refrigerator.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The impression is prepared for casting in accordance with required specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The mould and/or shell is formed using the impression. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The curing process is followed according to standard operating procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Inspect castings.

    Castings are visually inspected against the impression and standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Non-conforming and defective castings are rejected, processed and reported in accordance with standard operating procedures.

    Release castings that meet requirements according to standard operating procedures.

    Finish off moulds and shells.
