PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for learners who participate as a judge or referee of wrestling at an elementary level. The acquisition of competence against this unit standard will add value to one's job and capabilities to judge or referee a wrestling match. The completion of this unit standard will provide the learner with knowledge on how to start and stop the match and to operate the scoreboard and stop watch as timekeeper.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Interpret and apply rules of wrestling.
  • Evaluate and record actions of the wrestlers on the score sheet.
  • Evaluate and signal all actions of the wrestlers.
  • Apply communication skills to communicate with wrestlers and panel of officials.
  • Compile a report on the match.

    Interpret and apply rules of wrestling.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An understanding of the origin and history of wrestling is demonstrated in relation to the international and South African contexts. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The purpose and philosophy of officiating a wrestling match is explained within the context of the roles and responsibilities of a judge or referee. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Rules applicable to different categories of wrestling officials are interpreted and applied in accordance with FILA rulebook. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Situations when to call the controller is identified and explained in accordance with the rulebook. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Evaluate and record actions of the wrestlers on the score sheet. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Fundamental rules and regulations of wrestlers are explained in order to make accurate decisions when officiating a match. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Technical officials involved in the wrestling match are described and explained in terms of their roles and responsibilities. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Technical officials include but are not limited to referee, time keeper/scoreboard official, judge, mat chairman, controller and weigh in official.

    Evaluate and signal all actions of the wrestlers as a referee or judge.

  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments at exit points of the qualification, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise.

    Integrated Assessment:

    When conducting assessments, assessors must ensure that they are familiar with the full text of the unit standards being assessed. Assessors must ensure that the assessment covers the specific outcomes, critical cross-field outcomes and essential embedded knowledge by developing assessment activities and tools, which are appropriate to the contexts in which the learners are working. These activities and tools may include self-assessment, peer assessment, formative and summative assessment. It may be more effective and efficient to assess a number of unit standards together in an integrated way, thus reducing the overall number of assessments and ensuring that commonalities that exist between a number of unit standards are captured in a way that makes sense for assessment.
