PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The purpose of this unit standard is that credited learners are able to umpire a match on all inter-provincial, provincial and national tournaments. Learners credited against this unit standard are capable of umpiring and administering matches as required by the International Badminton Federation (BWF). Application of this set of competencies will ensure that matches will be umpired fairly.

This unit standard also allows for transformation within the Sport of Badminton, as learners become models for other learners. It is envisaged that this exemplary conduct would attract quality people to aspire to join the ranks of the Badminton South Africa Court Officials (BSACO).

Learners credited with this unit standard would be capable of:
  • Demonstrating an understanding of badminton laws and regulations.
  • Planning and preparing for a match.
  • Umpiring a match.
  • Administering the proceedings of a match as laid out in the competition rules.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that the learner is competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 3.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3.

    The recognition of prior learning will formalise informal and non-formal learning and learners will be able to obtain credits towards a national qualification.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope of this unit standard is related to the specific sport, namely, umpiring of matches in Badminton tournaments.The typical context is embedded in the International Badminton Federation Statute and in the Badminton South Africa Court Official's Manual. (Learning credited will reflect the ability to develop a rigorous approach to the acquisition of a broad knowledge base regarding examination for umpires). (Credited learners would be able to umpire a range of matches, and determine solutions to a variety of unpredictable problems during a match, often including a range of varied and specific contexts involving creative and non-routine activities). They would be able to exercise appropriate judgement as appointed line and service judges during tournaments.

    Demonstrate an understanding of and apply the badminton laws and regulations in refereeing a badminton game. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Badminton laws and regulations including by-laws refer to laws in accordance to the International Badminton Federation (BWF) and the BSACO manual.

    Various activities involved in a badminton game are explained with examples.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Equipment used for badminton is identified and checked for correctness using a checklist. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Equipment include but is not limited to competition net, scoring device, net measuring stick, score sheet, clipboard, stopwatch, yellow and red cards, pen.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The kit used by a referee is identified and checked to ensure conformance in terms of BWF and BSACO manual. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Kit refers to but is not limited to jersey, suitable shoes, socks, shorts.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The significance of utilising the courts and officials equipment is explained with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Competition net, scoring devices, net measuring sticks, score sheets clipboards, stopwatches, yellow and red cards.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Logistical arrangements for athletes are completed in according to BWF laws to ensure correctness and safety. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Logistical arrangements refer to but are not limited to accommodation, transportation, changing room.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Umpire a match. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The need to ensure that all players are on court prior the match is started is explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A toss is conducted with the players and allows the winning side to exercise their rights before warming up starts. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The court and court equipment are inspected to ensure that it is laid out properly and in a working condition. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The importance of ensuring that line judges and service judge are placed out correctly. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The opening announcement is used to ensure that the match is started with when warming up time elapses in accordance with badminton laws. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Faults during play are identified and corrected according to the BWF Statute and BSACO manual. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Lets are identified in order to make corrections according to the BWF statute and BSACO manual. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8 
    The significance of acknowledging line and service judges and their decisions during the match is explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 9 
    Knowledge of correct closing procedures is demonstrated when umpiring a game and a match.

    Hand signals are used when necessary when refereeing a match according to BWF Statute and BSACO manual. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Hand signals refer to but are not limited to service not continuous in a forward position, double address, whole of the shuttle not below the server's waist at the moment of being struck, at the instant of hitting the shuttle, the shaft of the racket not pointing in a downward direction, initial point of contact with the shuttle not on the base of the shuttle, some part of both feet not on the service court and in a stationary position until the service is delivered.

    Administer the proceedings of a match as laid out in the competition rules. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A score sheet is completed according to the BWF Statute and BSACO manual prior to and following a match. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The completed score sheet is submitted to match control for record keeping purposes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A report on all misconducts after the match and the decisions made during the match to the referee is compiled in accordance with standard match procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Documents are completed correctly and handed over to statics office and media. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The umpire's logbook is completed in accordance with badminton procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Assessment of learners occurs through providers accredited by Badminton South Africa Court Officials (BSACO) in accordance with applicable ETQA's policies and procedures.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with BSACO in accordance with applicable ETQA's policies and procedures.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with a relevant BSACO in accordance with applicable ETQA's policies and procedures.
  • The relevant BSACO according to the moderation guidelines and the agreed BSACO procedures will oversee moderation of assessment and is responsible for moderation of learner achievements of learners who meet the requirements of this unit standard.
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments at exit points of the qualification, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise.
  • Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described both in individual unit standard as well as the integrated competence described in the qualification.
