    Fans are defined and explained in terms of their operating principles and performance charts. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Fans include but is not limited to:
  • Fans, blowers, axial fans centrifugal fans, forward curved, backward inclined, airfoil, radial blade, propeller fans, tubeaxial fans and vaneaxial fans.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Fans are defined and explained in terms of their physical characteristics.

    Fans are defined and explained in terms of their performance characteristics.

    Airflow units are explained in terms of air flow evaluation calculations. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Airflow units include but is not limited to:
  • Velocity, temperature, velocity pressure, barometric pressure, equation constants, volume airflow rate and duct area.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Fan performance units are explained in terms of air flow evaluation calculations. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Fan performance units include but is not limited to:
  • Total differential pressure, static pressure at outlet, velocity pressure at outlet, static pressure at inlet, velocity pressure at inlet, total fan static differential pressure theoretical power required, airflow, total pressure.

    Pitot tube flow measurements are carried out at round duct and square duct measurement points.

    Fan performance curves are explained in terms of air flow and pressure.

    Standard Atmospheric Data for Altitudes and Psychrometric Charts are explained and applied in order to determine fan performance.

    Energy management opportunities are identified in relation to fan maintenance. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Maintenance refers to but is not limited to:
  • Rotation checks, belt checks, lubrication, cleaning, noise and vibration checks, leak checks, filter replacement and an annual maintenance program.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Low cost and retrofit opportunities are identified as possible fan energy management opportunities. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Low cost and retrofit opportunities refers to but is not limited to:
  • Fan speed optimisation, inlet and outlet optimisation, fan shut down opportunities, variable speed operation, dated equipment replacement, oversize motor replacement and microprocessor control.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Air flow control options are understood and analysed in terms of variable demand, energy use and cost. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Fan energy management opportunities are analysed and quantified in terms of cost savings and return on investment.

    Pumps are defined and explained in terms of their operating characteristics, type classifications and performance. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Pumps types include but is not limited to:
  • Centrifugal pumps; Radial flow and axial flow.
  • Positive displacemen; Rotary and reciprocating.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Pump operating principles are described in terms of flow and head, and pump law evaluation calculations. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Units include but is not limited to:
  • General; Head of fluid, equivalent pressure, specific gravity, velocity head, fluid velocity and gravity.
  • Centrifugal pump affinity laws; Impeller diameter, pump speed, fluid density, flow rate, total head and power.
  • Positive displacement pump laws; Pump speed, fluid density, flow rate, total head and power.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Pump power requirements are determined for various situations. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Units include but are not limited to:
  • Theoretical power required to move water at 100% efficiency, given liquid flow rate, given total pump pressure, conversion units, pump efficiency, belt drive efficiency, motor efficiency and overall efficiency.

    Multiple pump systems are analysed in terms of their combined curves.

    Cavitation is explained in terms of potential damage and energy loss.

  • Packing gland check, critical tolerances check, drive adjustments, pump impeller cleaning, shutting down unused pumps and annual maintenance program.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Low cost and retrofit opportunities are identified as possible pump energy management opportunities. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Liquid flow control options are understood and analysed in terms of variable demand, energy use and cost.
