This unit standard is for persons in the Engineering, Construction and Energy Sectors. This unit standard will contribute to the full development of the learner within the engineering, construction and energy environment by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field of Physical Planning and Construction. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within the engineering, construction and energy environment. A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:

  • Evaluate the components of a steam distribution system.
  • Identify and apply energy management opportunities.

    The advantages of steam are explained in terms of its use for energy production, industrial processes and space heating. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A typical steam system line/block diagram is described in terms of the inputs, outputs and energy losses. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A typical industrial steam system is described in terms of the components used. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The principles of steam tables are applied according to applicable laws.

    Describe boiler house operation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Boiler energy flow is explained as a function of fuel, feedwater and combustion air. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Burners are identified and their application explained as a function of fuel. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Burners include but are not limited to:
  • Oil burners, natural gas burners and pulverised coal burners.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The basic components of a boiler are identified and explained in terms of their function.

    Boiler types are identified and described in terms of their application and characteristics. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Boilers include but are not limited to:
  • Firetube boilers, watertube boilers, coiltube boilers and electric boilers.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Feedwater quality and quantity is explained as a direct function of treatment, treatment equipment and feedwater, and boiler water specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Boiler plant monitoring is carried out and a comprehensive logbook kept of all phases in accordance with workplace procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Logbook data includes but is not limited to:
  • Fuel data, combustion, steam, feedwater, make-up, blow down and boiler water.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Boiler plant efficiency is determined and evaluated as per the operational data.

    Operational data includes but is not limited to:
  • Logbook data, relevant costs, boiler output, pressure, operating time, relevant temperatures, losses and combustion efficiency.

    Evaluate the components of a steam distribution system.

    The function of the steam circuit is explained and the potential problems highlighted.

    Steam trap function and operation is explained in terms of type and operating characteristics.

    The term "flash steam" is understood and explained and flash steam recovery is quantified as a function of availability.

    End use equipment is identified and selected in terms of its application.
