PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit standard reflects the skills, values and knowledge required by people in the sub-field of Forestry and/or wood technology who must be able to demonstrate an understanding of the influence of wood structure and properties.

The qualifying learner is capable of describing the influence of wood structure and properties, and certain production factors on its quality.

People credited with this Unit Standard are able to:
  • Explain the wood quality requirements generally specified by the main users of wood products.
  • Describe the effect of wood growth properties on quality requirements.
  • Describe the effect of machined wood properties on these quality requirements.
  • Describe the effect of the drying out process of wood on these quality requirements.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
It is assumed that a Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard will be able to demonstrate:
  • Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3 or equivalentUnderstanding the structure of wood and its relationship to its strength and appearance, and how it holds water.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE
  • The typical scope that this Unit Standard covers the "Range" as described in the specific outcomes of this unit standard.
  • The typical context of this unit standard is the training of a Learner at NQF Level 4 in the effect of wood growth and production factors on its quality.
  • The level assigned to this unit standard, i.e. NQF Level 4, is appropriate because:

    > For foundational competence the learner has to demonstrate possession of wide- ranging technical skills, a broad knowledge base incorporating some basic theoretical concepts, and the ability to access, analyse and evaluate information independently.
    > For practical competence the learner has to show the ability to operate in a variety of familiar and unfamiliar contexts under broad guidance and evaluation, and select from a considerable choice of procedures.
    > For reflexive competence the learner has to demonstrate the ability to handle complete responsibility for quantity and quality of own output, and possibly for those of others.

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Explain the wood quality requirements generally specified by the main users of wood products.
    OUTCOME NOTES
The outcomes that learners achieve will be judged subject to these being achieved while:
  • The relevant activity is performed according to prescribed workplace procedures.
  • Strictly adhering to the prescribed safety and health measures.
  • Observing the relevant environmental management principles.
  • OUTCOME RANGE
    Specifications include appearance and strength.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The specifications of the end users of wood are explained according to timber trade and wood technological terminology.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION NOTES
The above assessment criteria will include assessment of the relevant crossfield outcomes:
  • Communicate effectively with all relevant persons in the relevant workplace.
  • Train persons in this workplace.
  • Ability to solve problems and make decisions regarding production activities in this workplace.
  • Lead the workers in this area.

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The quality requirements of wood are explained according to end user specifications, wood quality and using timber trade and wood technological terminology.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Describe the effect of wood growth properties on these quality requirements.
    OUTCOME RANGE
Quality requirements include structure, knots, spiral grain, juvenile wood, reaction wood, annual rings, heartwood and sapwood.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The effect of wood growth properties is explained according to quality requirements.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Wood growth properties and their effect on quality are described according to wood technological terminology.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Describe the effect of machined wood properties on these quality requirements.
Quality requirements include production equipment, dimensional accuracy, and surface quality.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The effect of machined wood properties on quality is explained according to quality requirements.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Machined wood properties and their effect on quality are described according to wood technological terminology.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The defects on wood caused by machining are described according to worksite procedures.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
Describe the effect of the drying out process of wood on these quality requirements.
Different types of distortion, checking surface and internal, collapse, discoloration, average moisture content, moisture content distribution, and drying stresses.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
