PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The Unit Standard will be useful for people who wish to complete a NQF Level 3 Learnership in Lumber Milling.

People credited with this Unit Standard are able to:
  • Understand the purpose and set up of secondary log breakdown facilities.
  • Set-up and operate log breakdown equipment to prescribed standards produce the required wet lumber, to prescribed specifications.
  • Perform these operations to the prescribed standards for this level. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:
  • Competence in mathematical and communication skills equivalent to NQF Level 1.
  • An understanding of the detail of the Lumber Milling process, especially in the Wet Mill area.
  • Skills competencies equivalent to Levels 1 of Wet Milling as required by the NQF Levels 1 Learnerships.
  • Workplace procedures, health and safety measures, and environmental management principles equivalent to NQF Level 1.

    Secondary log breakdown facilities Double log edger, Multi-rip, Band saw, Frame saw, Circular saw. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Collect setting up tools and equipment and green lumber cutting tools (blades, knives) for the individual secondary log breakdown and ancillary materials handling equipment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The correct tools for setting up and operating the secondary log breakdown facilities are assembled timeously. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The function of each tool is explained in terms of use in the wet mill. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Tools and equipment are assembled safely in accordance with standard operating procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Set up the secondary log breakdown facilities equipment and install the required cutting tools, to prescribed standards, in the prescribed manner. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The correct procedures for setting-up secondary log breakdown facility are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Secondary log breakdown tools and equipments are set up in accordance with industry standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The required cutting tools are installed safely according to industry standards. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Operate secondary log breakdown equipment safely in accordance with company's procedures to convert cants/side boards into green lumber of prescribed thickness. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Cants/side boards are cut into the required thickness as per by company's specification. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Checks are carried out on cut lumber for quality assurance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The operation of the secondary log breakdown facilities is carried out in accordance with standard operating procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Operate and control the critical machinery used in secondary log breakdown according to standard operating procedures in Wet Mill.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A deal frame saw in secondary log breakdown Wet Mill is used safely in accordance with industry standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A multi-rip equipment in secondary log breakdown Wet Mill is used safely in accordance with industry standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Bandsaw is used safely in secondary log breakdown Wet Mill. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Through put and quality of secondary log breakdown facility is controlled. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Carry out routine maintenance and lubrication of secondary log breakdown and ancillary handling equipment according to company's procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Maintenance and lubrication schedule is drawn according to company's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Routine maintenance and lubrication of tools and equipment used in secondary log breakdown is conducted according to schedule. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Routine maintenance, lubrication schedules and reports are completed according to company's procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An employed individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, the relevant responsible person in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for the assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. An unemployed Learner must arrange with the training provider for assessment.
  • Anyone assessing a Learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor for this purpose by the ETQA.
  • The manner/method and source of providing the learning that will enable compliance with the requirements of this Unit Standard, must be accredited by the ETQA.
  • Moderation of the assessment will be performed in the manner and by the moderator/s accredited for this purpose by the ETQA.
  • Assessment can be performed by means of oral testing, written tests and on-the-job observation. Formative assessment can be carried out during and after achievement of each specific outcome, and summative assessment at the conclusion of the training programme for this Unit Standard. Assessment will take place at a venue or workplace designated by the relevant assessor(s).

    The Learner will have acquired the detailed knowledge and understanding of and skills relating to:
  • The setting up of secondary log breakdown equipment and installation of appropriate cutting tools, to prescribed standards.
